(AP) ? President Hugo Chavez's new complications after cancer surgery prompted his closest allies to call for Venezuelans to pray for him on Monday, presenting an increasingly bleak outlook and prompting growing speculation about whether the ailing leader has much longer to live.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro looked weary and spoke with a solemn expression as he announced in a televised address from Havana on Sunday that Chavez now confronts "new complications" due to a respiratory infection nearly three weeks after his operation. He described Chavez's condition as delicate.

The streets of Caracas were abuzz on Monday with talk of Chavez's increasingly tough fight, while the news topped the front pages of the country's newspapers.

"He's history now," said Cesar Amaro, a street vendor selling newspapers and snacks at a kiosk in downtown Caracas. He motioned to a daily on the rack showing side-by-side photos of Maduro and National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, and said politics will now turn to them.

Amaro said he expects a new election soon to replace Chavez. "For an illness like the one the president has, his days are numbered now," he said matter-of-factly.

A government-organized New Year's Eve concert had been planned in a downtown Caracas plaza featuring popular Venezuelan bands, but was canceled due to Chavez's condition.

About 300 people filled a Caracas church for a Mass in the afternoon to pray for Chavez.

"This country would be terrible without Chavez. He's the president of the poor," said Josefa Carvajal, a 75-year-old former maid who sat in the pews. "They say the president is very sick. I believe he's going to get better."

The president's aides also sang and prayed at a Mass at the presidential palace, while government officials urged Venezuelans to keep their president in their prayers.

Political analyst Ricardo Sucre said the outlook for Chavez appears grim, saying Maduro's body language during his televised appearance spoke volumes.

"Everything suggests Chavez's health situation hasn't evolved as hoped," Sucre said. He said Maduro likely remained in Havana to keep close watch on how Chavez's condition develops.

"These hours should be key to having a more definitive prognosis of Chavez's health, and as a consequence make the corresponding political decisions according to the constitution," Sucre said.

Sucre and other Venezuelans said it seems increasingly unlikely that Chavez would be able to be sworn in as scheduled on Jan. 10.

The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since undergoing his fourth cancer-related surgery Dec. 11, and government officials have said he might not return in time for his inauguration for a new six-year term.

If Chavez dies or is unable to continue in office, the Venezuelan Constitution says that a new election should be held within 30 days.

Before his operation, Chavez acknowledged he faced risks and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice president if a new presidential election were necessary.

Chavez said at the time that his cancer had come back despite previous surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He has been fighting an undisclosed type of pelvic cancer since June 2011.

Maduro said on Sunday that he had met with Chavez. "We greeted each other and he himself referred to these complications," Maduro said, reading from a prepared statement.

"The president gave us precise instructions so that, after finishing the visit, we would tell the (Venezuelan) people about his current health condition," Maduro said. "President Chavez's state of health continues to be delicate, with complications that are being attended to, in a process not without risks."

Maduro was seated alongside Chavez's eldest daughter, Rosa, and son-in-law Jorge Arreaza, as well as Attorney General Cilia Flores. He held up a copy of a newspaper confirming that his message was recorded on Sunday.

"Thanks to his physical and spiritual strength, Comandante Chavez is facing this difficult situation," Maduro said.

Maduro said he had met various times with Chavez's medical team and relatives. He said he would remain in Havana "for the coming hours" but didn't specify how long.

Maduro, who arrived in Havana on Saturday for the sudden and unexpected trip, is the highest-ranking Venezuelan official to see Chavez since the surgery in Cuba, where the president's mentor Fidel Castro has reportedly made regular visits to check on him.

Before flying to Cuba, Maduro said that Energy Minister Hector Navarro would be in charge of government affairs in the meantime.

"The situation does not look good. The fact that Maduro himself would go to Cuba, leaving Hector Navarro in charge only seems understandable if Chavez's health is precarious," said David Smilde, a University of Georgia sociologist and analyst for the Washington Office on Latin America think tank.

Smilde said that Maduro probably made the trip "to be able to talk to Chavez himself and perhaps to talk to the Castros and other Cuban advisers about how to navigate the possibility of Chavez not being able to be sworn in on Jan. 10."

"Mentioning twice in his nationally televised speech that Chavez has suffered new complications only reinforces the appearance that the situation is serious," Smilde said.

Medical experts say that it's common for patients who have undergone major surgeries to suffer respiratory infections and that how a patient fares can vary widely from a quick recovery in a couple of days to a fight for life on a respirator.

Maduro's latest update differed markedly from a week ago, when he had said he received a phone call from the president and that Chavez was up and walking.

The vice president spoke on Sunday below a picture of 19th century independence hero Simon Bolivar, the inspiration of Chavez's leftist Bolivarian Revolution movement.

Maduro said that Chavez had sent year-end greetings to his homeland and a "warm hug to the boys and girls of Venezuela."

The vice president expressed faith that Chavez would "successfully fight this new battle." He concluded his message saying: "Long live Chavez."

On the streets of Caracas, images of Chavez smiling and saluting are emblazoned on campaign signs and murals. One newly painted mural reads: "Be strong, Chavez."

State television played video of Chavez campaigning for re-election, including a speech when he shouted: "I am a nation!"

A new government sign atop a high-rise apartment complex reads: "YOU ALSO ARE CHAVEZ."

Chavez has been in office since 1999 and was re-elected in October, three months after he had announced that his latest tests showed he was cancer-free.

Opposition politicians have criticized a lack of detailed information about Chavez's condition, and last week repeated their demands for a full medical report.

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas defended the government's handling of the situation, saying during a televised panel discussion on Sunday night that Chavez "has told the truth in his worst moments" throughout his presidency.

He also referred to a new surge of rumors about Chavez's condition and called for respect for the president and his family.

Chavez's daughter Maria, who has been with the president since his surgery, said in a message on her Twitter account: "Thank you people of Venezuela. Thank you people of the world. You and your love have always been our greatest strength! God is with us! We love you!"

Allies of the president also responded on Twitter, repeating the phrase: "Chavez lives and will triumph."

Fujitsu moans that Windows 8 is killing PC sales -

Fujitsu said the company will miss its annual shipment target for personal computers and it is blaming the fact that Windows 8 is not selling.

Fujitsu President Masami Yamamoto, 58, told reporters in Tokyo that interest in the software was weak.

He said that sales of devices running Windows fell 21 per cent from a year earlier in the four weeks after Microsoft released Windows 8 on October 26. The decrease has been fuelled by a 24 per cent drop in sales of notebook computers.

"Fujitsu doesn't plan to join its competitors that are discounting" to sustain sales, Yamamoto said. The company needs to strengthen its services in overseas markets, shifting from a product-focused approach.

But the announcement means that hopes that the release of Windows 8 helping PC sales to grow have proven groundless. Traditionally the release of new version of Windows has resulted in a boom in hardware. This is because the new software would require better hardware to run.

However with the last two versions of Windows that has not been the case. The software runs on more or less the same spec as the old hardware.

This means that people do not need a better computer to run Windows 8. In fact many of them can run it nicely on their old machines and squeeze out another few years of life.

To make matters worse for hardware makers, Windows 8 is more efficient at using hardware than Windows 7. It actually improves the older machine. If you bought a Windows 7 machine, all you need to do to make it better is move to Windows 8.

Does this mean that Windows 8 is a success? No, it most certainly doesn't. But it does mean that we should be looking a little askance at those claiming that sluggish hardware sales are as a result of a Windows 8 failure. This time really is different for Microsoft: you don't have to buy new kit in order to be able to run the software. Thus the success or not of Windows 8 just isn't going to be reflected in hardware sales in the same way as previous releases of the OS.?

The Truth About Hypnosis | Self Development Thoughts

Posted on 30th December 2012 in Hypnosis

?There are so many people out there who have so many misconceptions about hypnosis, and it is really time that someone got the truth out and helped people to learn what hypnosis is really all about and why they should not be scared about self hypnosis or any other type for that matter.

The Misconceptions About Hypnosis

The reason why many people seem to have misconceptions about hypnosis is largely due to the way it has been portrayed in various forms of the media. You may have seen the much stereotyped depiction of hypnosis on television or in the movies, complete with the tall hat and the swinging watch. Stage hypnotists and some magicians add to this image by making spectators do things, apparently against their will. Even though this is far from the truth ? you can be hypnotised only if you are willing at some level to go through the experience. If you are made to do something completely against your will or against your innate values, the protection mechanism in your subconscious (or unconscious) mind kicks in and you will wake up immediately.

Hypnosis ? The Real Story

Hypnosis, especially hypnotherapy, is an approach that can be used in a variety of different situations. The subject or the patient?s experience can vary quite significantly depending on a number of factors ? like their suggestibility, the skill of the hypnotist, how committed the subject is to the targeted change, and so on. It is important for the subjects to take the approach seriously. Or they may just be wasting their time.

Nowadays, hypnosis is used for the treatment or mitigation of a number of health conditions from cancer to dementia. It can also be used to reduce a number of physical symptoms such as pain in cancer patients. It has been used to replace anaesthesia by some dentists. It also has tremendous value in treating conditions like anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. It can also be used in tackling social issues like stage fright, social anxiety and also to improve self confidence & self esteem.

Almost everyone can be hypnotized, although there are people out there who think that they would be able to keep themselves from getting hypnotized. In fact one study shows that pre-adolescent children are in a state of waking trance 60 to 70% of the time. ?This is the time when they learn the maximum from their environment and their personalities get established.

If you learn how to do self hypnosis, there are a number of benefits that you can get out of this experience.

If you choose hypnotherapy as an approach to tackling some of your problems, it is important that you approach a good hypnotherapist preferably with some experience in handling your specific problem. Though it is very unlikely that hypnosis can do you any harm, you may not get the results that you are looking for if you work with a not-so-competent hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is a powerful tool in the hands of an expert and can give you tremendous benefits and perhaps even change your whole life for the better.

Russia pushes Syria to hold talks with opposition

NATALIA KOLESNIKOVA / AFP-Getty Images

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, left, speaks with his visiting Egypt counterpart Mohamed Amr as they meet on the Syrian crisis in Moscow on Dec. 28.

By Reuters

Russia urged the Syrian government on Friday to act on its stated readiness for dialogue with its opponents, throwing its weight behind a diplomatic push to end a 21-month-old conflict in Syria.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he had urged Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad to emphasize his government's openness to dialogue with the opposition during talks in Moscow on Thursday.

"We actively encouraged ... the Syrian leadership to make as concrete as possible its declared readiness for dialogue with the opposition," Lavrov told reporters after talks with his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Kamel Amr in Moscow.

He said the Syrian government should stress its readiness for talks on the widest possible range of matters, in line with an international agreement in Geneva last June calling for a transitional government.

"I think a realistic and detailed assessment of the situation inside Syria will prompt reasonable opposition members to seek ways to start a political dialogue," added Lavrov, who last week said that neither side would win by force.

Putin says fate of Assad unimportant to him

Russia expects to meet a senior U.S. diplomat on Syria next month to discuss with international Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi his plans to end the civil war there, the Kremlin's envoy to the region said earlier on Friday.

Brahimi will visit Moscow on Saturday for talks on the results of his negotiations with Syrian President Bashar Assad and his opponents during a five-day trip to Damascus in which he called for political change to end the bloodshed.

"We will listen to what Lakhdar Brahimi has to say about the situation in Syria, and after that, probably, there will be a decision to hold a new meeting of the 'three Bs'," Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told the RIA news agency -- in a word play on the first letter of the diplomats' last names.

Bogdanov, U.S. Undersecretary of State William Burns and Brahimi, the joint special representative of the United Nations and the Arab League, agreed that a political solution to the crisis was necessary and possible in talks earlier this month.

Bogdanov, the Kremlin's special envoy for Middle East Affairs, said the three would meet again in January after the holidays.

Russia has also invited the head of the internationally-recognized, opposition Syrian National Council, Moaz al-Khatib, to talks, he said, in comments that appeared underline Moscow's commitment to helping Brahimi seek a way out of the crisis.

Brahimi, who has called for a transitional government to rule until elections, is trying to broker a peaceful transfer of power in Syria, where more than 44,000 people have been killed in a revolt against four decades of Assad family rule.

Past peace efforts have floundered as what began as peaceful protests in March 2011 turned into civil war. The conflict has become an increasingly sectarian struggle between mostly Sunni Muslim rebels and Assad's security forces, drawn primarily from his Shiite-rooted Alawite minority.

Assad forces accused of using 'poisonous gases'

World powers think Russia, which has given Assad military and diplomatic aid during the uprising, has the ear of Syria's government and must be a central player in any peace talks.

Moscow has tried to distance itself from Assad in recent months and has denied it is propping him up. But it maintains Assad's exit cannot be a precondition for talks and has repeatedly said Western powers should not impose solutions on Syria.

Lavrov warned on Thursday that time was running out to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and halt a descent into "bloody chaos".

Wis. couple says pet chicken alerted them to blaze

(AP Photo/Courtesy Barb Murray)

(AP) ? A Wisconsin couple says clucks, not fire trucks, helped them escape a blaze at their home.

Dennis Murawska, 59, said a pet chicken named Cluck Cluck woke his wife Susan Cotey, 52, with loud clucking from its cage in the basement two floors below about 6:15 a.m. Thursday. The couple's two cats also were running around the main floor.

Murawska said he had been half awake but didn't know about the fire because the smoke alarms hadn't gone off. He realized something was wrong when his wife got up.

"The chicken gets quite vocal when she gets excited," he said.

Cluck Cluck came from a nearby farm in Alma Center, about 135 miles east of Minneapolis, Murawska said. When the chicken began wandering over to his house, his neighbor said he could kill it because it wasn't producing any eggs. But Murawska felt sorry for Cluck Cluck because she had a mutated foot and decided to keep her. He fed the bird and built a coop, and then his wife let Cluck Cluck into the basement on cold nights.

"I spent way more money than I ever should've," Murawska said by telephone. "I guess it paid off."

The couple escaped, and firefighters found the chicken in its cage and one of the cats alive in the basement. Another cat hasn't been found and is presumed dead, Murawska said. The couple and their surviving cat checked into a Black River Falls hotel, while Cluck Cluck is staying with the neighbor who used to own her.

Alma Center Fire Chief Jeff Gaede said the fire started in the attic of the attached garage and was not suspicious. The house was a total loss, but it could have been worse ? if not for the chicken.

"We are used to hearing about a dog or cat or something, but we never heard of a chicken waking up a resident for a fire," Gaede said. "That's pretty amazing."

There?s A Difference Between Private And Personal

3916007787_634844b73c_zWhile most of us were enjoying the holidays with our families all over the world, someone who is related to the CEO of Facebook posted a photo of her family to friends, and then some journalist person downloaded it and tweeted it. There?s a real difference between something being private and something being personal. And that, as the aforementioned incident highlights, is a notion that a lot of people — including Randi Zuckerberg — have forgotten, online and off. What I mean by this is that just because you post something online, doesn?t mean it?s meant for public consumption. Yes, this all sounds very conflated, and yes, Facebook privacy controls are about as easy to understand as left-handed scissors for a right-handed person. However, somewhere in this slow news big news cycle, publications started to tell the story that said Facebook CEO’s sister clearly didn’t understand Facebook’s privacy controls. This is simply not true, because the photo wasn’t private, it was personal.?Allow me to explain the difference. Private As A Peacock Private: confined to or intended only for the persons immediately concerned; confidential: a private meeting If something is “private” in your mind, it’s probably not a good idea to share it on the Internet…anywhere. I don’t care what types of controls a social network gives you. There’s no such thing as full-on “privacy” on the Internet. Do you know what is private? A good-old-fashioned photo in a scrapbook, passed around one by one at the dinner table during the holidays. If you see someone try to pull out their phone to snap a photo for Instagram purposes, you can say “HEY! That’s private.” This can’t be done on the Internet. Once something is out there, it can be screen-shotted, captured and re-shared just as easily as it was uploaded in the first place. As we learned with Snapchat and Poke, those sexy private photos and videos aren’t really “private” either. I’m not even going to get into the difference between public and private, because I feel like that’s fairly obvious. Privacy is a lost art in humanity these days. We’re so used to sharing every darn thing that happens to us, myself included, that we have lost a sense of self, therefore leaving ourselves open to the shit show that ensued during the boringest news week of the century. No matter what Randi Zuckerberg said after the fact, people

Looking at Private Schools for Your Children

Your child?s success in life has a lot to do with you, but it also has to do with the school he or she attended. Private schools and public, were usually the main option from which most people thought they could choose. Today, some may choose an independent school as well, which is a college prep style of school.

The school you choose for your children is ultimately up to you. You know your children best, so you might know what type of school might be the best fit. If your child struggles academically, then a public school might be an option for them if the school you are considering has a special education program. Some private schools may also help a child who is behind more than most. A college prep school however, may not be the best choice. The focus of this type of school is on a child preparing for college. Although children with special needs can go to college, another school might be more of an encouragement in that direction.

Private schools come in all shapes and sizes. Some are parochial and are a school that is attached and associated with a local church. Others might simply be a school that is not funded by the state. It does not have to have any religious associations.

A privately run school may not offer financial aid. That is one of the differences between an independent school and one that is privately run. One that is independent may have the resources to get financial aid for your child to attend the school. Other significant differences may be in the academic goals; although they may also agree in this area. It will really depend on the school.

If your child struggles in the public school for various reasons and is looking for a smaller setting, then private schools might be that solution. Before making a decision on one school, you should include your kids in the decision. Take a trip to the various places and have the kids sit for the day in each one. By the end, they should know their preference. If you are allowed, you may want to observe a few classes as well.

School has changed a great deal over the years. What was once mostly academic has now become a multi-faceted culture that includes academics, athletics, and social situations. There is nothing wrong with teaching through real-life experiences, but it is important to be balanced in the right direction. Private schools may offer that balance that your child needs.

Schatz to be sworn in as US senator for Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) ? Incoming U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz will be sworn into office after being appointed by Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie and flying to Washington with President Barack Obama aboard Air Force One.

Schatz was expected to take the oath of office Thursday afternoon on Capitol Hill.

Schatz was Hawaii's lieutenant governor under Abercrombie. He headed Obama's 2008 election effort in the state.

His selection went against the dying wishes of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, whom Schatz replaces.

gregra's Site - Where Can I Buy A Collector Car?

If you go to car shows to ogle all that chrome and the fancy paint jobs on all the classics, sooner or later you are going to want a collector car. Some people say that car enthusiasts never outgrew their childhood and that as adult kids, we still want our toys. What better toy can you think of than a classic car with the old-style curves, big engine, and retro appeal?

You may even already own one or more collector cars and may want to add to your collection. But it is not like you can go down to the local car dealer and have your pick from a whole line of available cars. Collector cars are harder to find, especially if you are looking for a certain model. But exactly where can I buy a collector car? Are there any sources better than others? If you are in the market to buy a collector car, here are some of the best places to look.

Online Classic Car Sites

While trying to figure out where can I buy a collector car, one of the best places to check out is online. There are dozens of classic car sites out on the web where owners can buy, sell, and trade collector cars. You can find almost any type of collector car in various conditions. Some sites are solely for completely refinished collector cars while others deal in project cars and hard-to-find parts.

Online is also the best place to find other car hobbyists. If you are looking for a specific car, part, or just have a general question, the forums on some of these sites are excellent places to get a quick answer. A couple of the more popular websites where you can buy a collector car are AutoTraders.com, AutoTradersClassic.com, Ebay, Atoncer.com, OldCarOnline.com, and ClassicCar.com.

Collector Car Publications

buy-collector-carBefore the Internet, the next best place to look when wondering where can I buy a collector car are car trader magazines and collector car publications. For years these sources had been the place to look for any collector cars that were on the market. Anyone who was interested in selling or buying a classic would advertise in these periodicals. Even today, the trades and magazines are still a good place to find that right car you are looking for. One of the most popular sources is Auto Trader magazine. You can find it on just about any newsstand where they sell newspapers or other magazines. There is also Car Collector magazine, Low Rider, and Hot Rod.

Specialty Dealers

When someone mentions a car dealership, most people think of a big open lot full of the latest model of cars. However, there are specialty dealers out there that deal only in collector cars. There are not as many of these dealers around and you usually won?t find their inventory of cars out on an open lot. Generally, these dealers keep their classic cars in storage where they are well protected. To find out what the specialty dealer has in their inventory, you will need to contact them. An appointment has to be made in order to get a look at the car. If you go through a specialty dealer, though, you may not get a great deal on the price.

Direct From Owners

The most common way to find a collector car to buy is to purchase it directly from the owner. You may find an ad in the newspaper or just happen to be driving by and see the car with a for sale sign. If you are looking for a specific model of collector car, you are generally going to be limited on what is available in the local market. However, you can often get the best prices by dealing directly with an owner. If you want to buy directly from the owner, keep looking at the newspapers for ads or look up the local classic car club to find out if anything is for sale.

Collector Car Auctions

Collector cars often appear in auctions. Buying a collector car at an auction is a lot like playing the lottery. For one, you can never be sure what will show up at auction or what condition it will be in. Second, you can never be sure how the bidding will go. If there is a large crowd at the auction, chances are the price of a collector car will go high. If there are not many people at the auction, you might find the cars going for a lower bid. Be aware that auctions are popular places for collectors of classic cars. Everyone is there for the same reason you are; they are looking for a bargain.

Spokesman: George H.W. Bush in 'guarded condition'

Former President George H.W. Bush is currently in the intensive care unit where his doctors have prescribed him a liquid-only diet. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By Charles Hadlock and Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

Updated at 7:08 p.m. ET: Former President George H.W. Bush was battling an elevated fever Wednesday and was in "guarded condition" in a hospital intensive care unit, a family spokesman said.

?"The President is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family," said a statement from family spokesman Jim McGrath.?Bush, 88, was moved to the intensive care unit at The Methodist Hospital at the Texas Medical Center in Houston on Sunday, McGrath said.?

Bush has been in the hospital since?Nov. 29?for treatment of complications related to bronchitis. After initial expectations that he would be hospitalized for only a few days proved to be wrong, doctors said through a hospital statement on Dec. 13 that they expected Bush would "be able to?celebrate Christmas at home."

But the 41st president remained at The Methodist Hospital -- where he was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, Neil's wife, and his grandson, Pierce -- all of whom brought him a meal of Chinese food for Christmas dinner, The Houston Chronicle reported.

He also received gifts, emails, and telephone calls from family members and close friends, NBC's Janet Shamlian reported.

On Wednesday, McGrath told NBC News that the former president's fever was elevated from the previous day, although he said that he did not know by how much.?Earlier, McCrath had said that doctors saw a "slight improvement" in Bush's condition that morning.

McGrath said that Dorothy Bush, his daughter, visited Wednesday, and George W. Bush, the 43rd president, would be visiting soon.

Bronchitis is a common condition in which the bronchial tubes in the lungs become inflamed and produce mucus, which creates the need to cough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can turn serious in people with weak immune systems, including children and the elderly. Symptoms such as chest pain, weakness and coughing typically last two weeks, but can linger for as long as two months.?

In the weeks since he was admitted, Bush has had a low-grade fever, but doctors have said they are "cautiously optimistic" he will recover, Shamlian reported.

George Kovacik, a hospital spokesman, said in a statement earlier this week that Bush was in stable condition.?

?His doctors feel he should build up his energy before going home. They remain optimistic about his full recovery and are being extra cautious with his care,? the statement said.

Leader of an American political dynasty, George Bush's influence was felt beyond his terms as president and vice president. Take a look back at his life and career.

Bush was elected president of the United States in 1988, the capstone of a long career of public service.

He was a Texas Republican member of the House of Representatives in the 1960s and 1970s and head of the CIA in 1976-1977.?The organization?s headquarters in Langley, Va., was later?renamed the ?George Bush Center for Intelligence.?

Bush lost his first bid for the Republican nomination for the U.S. presidency in 1980, at which time Ronald Reagan chose him to be his running mate. He went on to serve two terms as Reagan?s vice president before winning the presidency. He was defeated for re-election in 1992 by Bill Clinton.

In late 2004, Bush teamed up with Clinton to raise money for the victims of the Asian tsunami. That effort was so successful, the two former presidents did the same for Katrina victims in 2005.?

President George H.W. Bush remains in the hospital. NBC News' Janet Shamlian reports.

'Django Unchained': Movie Review Roundup - The Hollywood ...

Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio head to the pre-Civil War South in Quentin Tarantino?s Django Unchained.

The film from the Weinstein Company bowed Christmas Day to $15 million, the top opening for an R-rated film on the holiday. Although its depiction of slavery has been criticized by Spike Lee and its use of the n-word has been rebuked by others, Django received? strong reviews from critics and currently holds an 89 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an 80 percent on Metacritic.

PHOTOS: 2012's Biggest Rule Breakers: 'Walking Dead,' Psy, Quentin Tarantino and 7 Others Who Rocked the Status Quo

Read what top critics had to say about the film below.

The Hollywood Reporter?s Todd McCarthy, who included it in his top 10 films of 2012, wrote: ?Tarantino?s affinity for black culture and interest in the ways blacks and whites relate always have been evident, but they?ve never before been front and center to the extent that they are in Django Unchained. Some might object to the writer-director?s tone, historical liberties, comic japes or other issues, but there can be no question who gets the shaft here: This is a story of justifiable vengeance, pure and simple, and no paleface is spared, even the good German who facilitates a slave?s transformation into a take-no-prisoners hunter of whites who trade in black flesh.?

Washington Post?s Ann Hornaday: ?The art of creative anachronism Tarantino practices in this extravaganza of Southern gothic camp is far more successful than 2009?s Inglourious Basterds in meaningfully engaging the history it?s repurposing. Where Basterds was little more than a larky speculative burlesque, Django Unchained possesses an unmistakable subversive power, its playfully insurrectionist spirit perhaps the modern-day pop-culture equivalent of far more high stakes rebellions of yore.?

STORY: Spike Lee: 'Django Unchained' is 'Disrespectful,' I Will Not See It

New York Times? A.O. Scott: ?It is digressive, jokey, giddily brutal and ferociously profane. But it is also a troubling and important movie about slavery and racism.?

Slate?s Dana Stevens: ?Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino?s blaxploitationspaghetti western about a freed slave turned bounty hunter, provoked a lot of contradictory feelings in me, including some that don?t usually come in pairs: Hilarity and boredom. Aesthetic delight and physical nausea. Fist-pumping righteousness and vague moral unease. Of course, provoking intense feelings is what Tarantino?s cinema is all about.?

Chicago Tribune?s Michael Phillips: ?By the two-hour mark the fun had oozed out of the movie for me. It's long. Or feels it. Tarantino's scripts tend to read, and play, like writing samples stitched together, full of heavily brocaded monologues for his most voluble characters. Yet he's a lousy self-editor, and despite his prodigious filmmaking knowledge and lust for filmmaking history, as a director he struggles with pacing and excess and detours.?

STORY: Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' Reignites Debate Over N-Word in Movies

Los Angeles Times? Betsy Sharkey: ?In Django, Tarantino is a man unchained, creating his most articulate, intriguing, provoking, appalling, hilarious, exhilarating, scathing and downright entertaining film yet. Even given the grand tradition of artists using their work for sharp social rebukes ? Mel Brooks' genius swipe at Nazism in "The Producers," for one ?Tarantino's mash-ups between the unconscionable inhumanity of others and his outrageous riffs on the matter defy comparison.?

Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart Top Forbes Most Bankable List

Add another achievement to Natalie Portman's ever-growing list: most bankable star.

The Oscar-winning actress tops Forbes' list of Hollywood?s Best Actors for the Buck, returning $42.70 for every dollar a studio spends on her.

STORY:?Eddie Murphy Named Forbes' Most Overpaid Actor

While more than half of the list is composed of actors coming off incredibly profitable tentpole franchises, Portman's topping of the list is notable due to the fact that it was an indie film (Black Swan) that pushed her ahead of everyone else. Swan's worldwide gross of $329 million (on a $13 million budget) made it one of Hollywood's most profitable films. When her other major studio releases were added to the mix -- No Strings Attached, which grossed $150 million worldwide, and Your Highness, which flopped -- Portman came out on top.

Kristen Stewart came in a close second on the strength of the Twilight franchise and Snow White and the Huntsman, returning an average of $40.60 for every dollar she earned. She is followed by Shia LaBeouf ($35.80) and Stewart's Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson ($31.70). Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe ($30.50), rounds out the top five.

A big surprise on the list is Kevin James, who comes in at No. 10 with a $22.40 average return.

The actors' return on investment was calculated using information on their earnings from Forbes' Celebrity 100 list, box-office grosses and budget estimates, using "the last three films each actor starred in over the last three years that opened in more than 2,000 theaters," according to the announcement. Supporting and ensemble roles were not considered, neither were animated films.

This list is far more positive than Forbes' Most Overpaid Actors list for 2012, which was released earlier this month with Eddie Murphy topping the list, returning an average of just $2.30 at the box office for every dollar he was paid.

For the complete top 10, see Forbes.

What a Year to be a Hays Rebel athlete: Top ten moments in Rebel ...

The Hays softball team surprised just about everyone but itself during a historic playoff run in May. The Lady Rebels, who upset a San Antonio-Harlandale team with a 23-2 record in the first round of the playoffs, then knocked off regional power Dripping Springs, a State semifinalist in 2011, with a sweep in their best-of-three area-round series before falling in the regional quarterfinals. Rebels make playoffs in every team sport in exciting 2012 campaign.

Hays High School continued to build on the success head football coach and athletic coordinator Blake Feldt brought to the school the minute he walked through the door.

The Rebels made the playoffs in every team sport in 2012 and had some excellent individual achievements in the athletic arena as well.

Here are the top sports stories in 2012 at Hays High. Next week, we?ll review the top sports stories at Lehman High School.

?

1. Hays High football team wins consecutive football titles for first time in school history?

Sophomore Emory Cuzze made a sack and fumble recovery in Hays? regular-season finale that will be talked about as long as Hays Rebel football is played.

With Hays? district-title hopes hanging in the balance, Cuzze pummeled Alamo Heights quarterback Kalen Brockwell to the ground with 90 seconds remaining. The hit caused a fumble, and Cuzze gobbled it up too for good measure, and Hays beat the Mules on Heights? home turf 24-21 in early November.

?It?s the greatest feeling in the world, you have no idea,? Cuzze said of his game-winning play. ?We knew we had no choice. We had to hold them.?

The victory gave the Rebels a share of the District 27-4A title with Kerrville Tivy and Alamo Heights.

It marked the first time Hays has won consecutive district football titles in the 46-year history of the school.

Heights rallied from 21-0 down at halftime and had a chance to tie the game at 24 with 2:13 remaining, but Matt Kelley?s 30-yard field goal attempt sailed a few feet left of the goal post.

?Some people say there isn?t any such thing as luck, but we got lucky there,? said Hays lineman William Trevillion, who will play college ball at Texas State University. ?I?m not going to lie, I?m glad he missed it ? we?re district champs now.?

Hays failed to get a first down on offense after Kelley?s miss, so the stitching wasn?t officially sewn on Hays? district-championship patches until Cuzze recovered the Brockwell fumble and the Rebs could run out the clock.

?We talked all week about becoming the first team in school history to win back-to-back district titles,? Hays head coach Blake Feldt said. ?We?ve had a lot of great teams over the years here, but to be the first ones to do something like this is special.?

Hays went on to roll to an easy win over San Antonio Highlands in the bi-district playoff round before falling to state-ranked Leander in the area round.

Quarterback Caleb Kimbro, who has verbally committed to the University of New Mexico, finished his stellar career with more than 7,100 combined passing and rushing yards and 81 total touchdowns.

?

2. Lindsey McCurdy wins Class 4A state?golf tournament

When Hays High junior Lindsey McCurdy sank a 40-foot birdie putt on hole No. 3 in the first round of the UIL State Class 4A Golf Tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, she thought it might be a pretty good sign of things to come.

It turned out she was right.

McCurdy finished her final round early on May 1 and held off a late afternoon charge from Northwest Byron Nelson High School?s Maty Monzingo to win the UIL State Class 4A Golf title.

After shooting a first-round 3-under 69, McCurdy found birdies harder to come by the next day, and carded a 1-over 73 to finish the tournament with a two-day total of 2-under 142.

That opened the door for Monzingo, who rallied with six birdies on Tuesday and actually led McCurdy by two shots with two holes to play. But Monzingo made bogey on the 352-yard par-4 No. 8. She then pushed her tee shot past the out of bounds fence on No. 9, as her ball landed in the driving range to the right of the fairway on her final hole of the day.

It turned out to be one of the most expensive driving range golf balls in recent memory.

Monzingo still gave herself a chance to force a playoff for the state title with McCurdy, but she missed an 8-foot putt for bogey on the par-4 to finish the day with a score of 2-under 70, and a two-day total of 1-under 143.

McCurdy, who signed with Southern Methodist University, became Hays? first state champion in any sport other than track and field since the school opened in 1968.

?It feels great to represent my school,? McCurdy said. ?To be able to say I?m one of just a few that have done something is a very cool experience.?

Only Chuck Ables (high jump, 1978), Whitney Dill (1,600-meter run, 1999), Helen Breyfogle (high jump, 2000), Britni Lawrence (pole vault, 2002 and 2003), and Jessica Doyle (pole vault, 2007 and 2008) have ever won state titles in Hays High School history before McCurdy claimed another gold medal for the Rebels.

?

3. Hays High softball makes regional quarterfinals

The Hays softball team surprised just about everyone but itself during a historic playoff run in May.

The Lady Rebels, who upset a San Antonio-Harlandale team with a 23-2 record in the first round of the playoffs, then knocked off regional power Dripping Springs, a State semifinalist in 2011, with a sweep in their best-of-three area-round series.

The Lady Rebs beat Dripping Springs 5-4 in game one and came back to beat the Lady Tigers 1-0 the next day to complete the sweep.

Hays advanced to play district rival Canyon High in the regional quarterfinals, where the Lady Rebs ultimately saw their season come to an end with a game-three loss to the Cougarettes in mid-May.

Still, not bad for a Hays team that entered the playoffs with an overall losing record.

?Even in some of the district games we lost against Smithson Valley, Canyon and Lockhart, I could see the hurt in our players? eyes,? Hays head coach Aaron Fuller said. ?Even in defeat we were learning things ? learning how to get better and win those games in the future. That?s what helped us in the playoffs. When we stepped on the field we expected to win.?

Defending Class 4A Region IV champ Dripping Springs came into the area-round series versus Hays with a 23-6 record.

In game one, Hays finally got to Dripping Springs starter Brandi Needham, one of the best pitchers in the area, in the top of the fourth inning. Hannah Ramsey, who recently signed with Georgetown University, singled and stole second. Brayden Pinckard?s RBI single knotted the game 1-1.

The Lady Rebels exploded for four runs off Needham in the top of the fifth.

Maddy Shannon?s two-RBI single scored Gabi Albarez?and Julia Montoya. Kinna Kinsey?s fielder?s choice grounder plated Sarah Leal, and Ramsey?s single to left scored Shannon.

Sophomore sensation Leal shut the door on Dripping Springs in the seventh inning, retiring the Tigers in order. She finished with nine strikeouts.

Leal shut out Dripping Springs the next day, and Hays scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning to seal the win.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Gabi Albarez?drove in Haleigh Madden with a single to center for the only run of the game.

It looked like Dripping Springs was going to tie the score in the top of the third inning, but Hannah Ramsey came up with the defensive play of the game from centerfield. She threw out Tigers? runner Caitlyn Poehl, who was trying to score from second base after a single by Janice Burke. Ramsey?s rocket throw to Hays catcher Brittany Pape just nailed Poehl at the plate.

?Sarah pitched unbelievable,? Fuller said. ?And the defense played outstanding behind her. We made great defensive play after great defensive play. That was the difference in the game. The play Hannah made was unbelievable.?

Against Canyon in the regional quarterfinals, Hays dropped game one 8-3 before rebounding to take game two 5-3. Canyon dropped the hammer, however, in game three with a 17-3 win.

Canyon and Smithson Valley, two teams from Hays? District 27-4A, would advance to play each other in the regional finals. Smithson Valley advanced to state with an extra-inning win. Smithson Valley High School went on to win the state championship.

?We have a lot of talent coming back next year and I expect our team to be just as good or even better than we were this season,? Fuller said.

?

4. Hays boys basketball team wins first playoff game since 1980

The last time the Hays boys basketball team won a playoff game, the fathers of two current Rebel players were on the squad.

That all changed in February, as Hays overcame a very sluggish start to pull away from Kerrville Tivy for a 47-33 win in the bi-district round of the playoffs at South San High.

?You could hear it in the way the crowd just kept cheering after the game,? said senior Trey Johnson, whose dad Buddy was on Hays? 1980 team. ?They were really pulling for us.?

Tivy came out of the gate running an offense that more resembled a three-legged turtle race, pulling the ball out for minutes at a time to try and make Hays come out of its zone defense.

The tactic worked for a bit, as the Antlers led 3-2 after one quarter of play and 21-13 at halftime.

Hays used a man-to-man trap after the break that befuddled Tivy.

The Rebs went on a 17-2 run from midway through the third quarter to midway through the fourth to take command of the game.

Jaren Rodriguez started the surge with a 3-pointer from the right baseline and Johnson followed with a driving layup. A Steven Jass steal and pass to Jacob Rodriguez for a 3-pointer at the top of the key gave Hays a 31-29 lead heading to the final quarter.

Hayden Cagle?s steal and layup, and Jaren Rodriguez?s fade-away jumper that bounced up and in increased the margin to 37-30, and Tivy never threatened again.

?We want to use this as a building block,? said Hays guard Caleb Kimbro, whose father John was also on the 1980 team. ?We want this to be the start of a winning tradition for boys basketball around here.?

Despite a battle that saw Hays lead for much of the game, the Rebels lost in the area round against Lake Travis to see their season come to an end.

?

5. Hays volleyball advances to regional quarters

After an easy win over San Antonio Lanier in the bi-district volleyball playoffs, the Lady Rebels faced much tougher competition in the area round but still prevailed over Vandegrift in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 sweep in early November.

Hannah Ramsey and Sydney Paradeaux had 13 kills apiece to lead Hays to a sweep.

Hays started out strong and only trailed Vandegrift, which was coming off its first-ever playoff win, early on in the second and third sets.

?It was one of our best efforts of the year and that?s what you need in the playoffs,? Hays head coach Erica Walther said. ?We played solid defense, we had a high kill percentage and we served well.?

The Lady Rebels set the tone with a 7-0 run early in the first set as Paradeaux hammered home three straight kills to give Hays an 8-1 lead.

Two consecutive Natalie Valdez aces and a Dezaray Garner kill that landed just inbounds sparked the Lady Rebels in the second set, and Ramsey?s kill on match point in set three sent Hays to the regional quarterfinals against Cedar Park.

The Lady Rebs would go on to fall in the next round to Cedar Park, who has now knocked Hays out of the playoffs two straight years.

?

6. Doug Ragsdale wins his 400th baseball game and makes one last run to district playoffs before retiring

Before the 2012 baseball season, longtime Hays head baseball coach Doug Ragsdale announced this would be his 18th and final year at the helm of the program he had led to nine district titles since taking over in 1995. Hays lost all chance of another district title run after an 0-3 start in 27-4A, but Ragsdale and the Rebs didn?t lose faith in each other. Hays rallied to win six out of seven games during one stretch and made the playoffs for the 16th time in Ragsdale?s 18 seasons.

Along the way, Ragsdale picked up his 400th career win with a dramatic Hays win at Alamo Heights.

The Rebs were trailing the Mules 4-3 with two outs and no one on base in the top of the seventh inning and looked to be headed toward defeat.

That?s before Aaron Martinets and Trevor Ragsdale hit consecutive triples to tie the game.

Hays would go on to win with a big rally in the top of the eighth. Adrian Acosta struck out two Heights batters in the bottom of the eighth to shut the barn door on the Mules and earn the victory on the mound.

?Picking up my 400th win means I?ve been coaching a long time. It is really a tribute to a lot of kids playing hard through a lot of years,? Ragsdale said.

Hays went on to lose in the bi-district round of the playoffs to powerful Boerne Champion, which was a regional finalist this season.

?

7. Hays boys soccer team is area finalist and district champs for 2nd straight year

The Hays High boys soccer team clinched its second straight district title with a 1-0 win at Cedar Creek in March thanks to a Christian Varela first-half goal.

Last year, Hays had clinched the district title before spring break and had a stellar 21-1-1 record in the regular season. This year, the Rebels faced a few more ups and downs during their regular-season journey but the end result was the same.

?It was pretty wild heading into our last game knowing if we won or tied we were district champs and if we lost we were probably going to finish fourth,? Hays head coach Jason Burnett said after the win. ?We definitely faced some adversity with a few losses this year but I think that made us stronger. We found out what our team was made of. They are a tough and determined group.?

The Rebels went on to beat Manor 3-2 in the bi-district playoffs before falling to Vista Ridge in the area round for the second straight season.

?

8. Four track and field team members qualify for the UIL State Meet

Four members of the Hays High School track and field team qualified for the Class 4A State Track and Field Meet at Myers Stadium in Austin in May.

Although none finished higher than fifth against ultra-tough competition at the state level, it was still quite an accomplishment.

Hays? Meredith Driskell made her second straight trip to state after winning the pole vault competition with a leap of 12-feet, 3-inches at the Class 4A Region IV Meet at Alamo Stadium. Also at regionals, Taylor Hough finished second in the triple jump (43-feet, 10.25-inches), Martin Horne finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.6 seconds) and Mariana Sigala finished second in the 800-meter dash (two minutes, 18 seconds) to qualify for state for the Rebels. Sigala also qualified for the UIL Class 4A State Cross Country Meet in November and finished 36th.

?It was amazing to have so many of our athletes qualify for state coming out of a very competitive region,? said Hays track coach Mitch Phillips. ?Every single one of our athletes at the regional meet that made it to state battled to get there. It?s great to see Meredith Driskell, Mariana Sigala, and Taylor Hough qualify as seniors and we know junior Martin Horne has an excellent chance to get back to state next year.?

Hough qualified for both regionals and state on his sixth and final triple jump attempt.

?The experience at state was more than amazing,? Hough said. ?I had a great time and enjoyed every second of it. Seeing all my hard work pay off was awesome.?

?

9. Hays tennis team enjoys one of its best seasons in school history

The Hays High tennis team ran into some good competition at the Regional Tennis Tournament held in San Antonio in October.

Top teams in the state such as Lake Travis, Alamo Heights and Boerne Champion were in the draw.

After losing to 2010 State runner-up Boerne Champion, the Rebs rebounded by winning the next two matches against San Antonio Jefferson (10-0) and Austin LBJ (10-6).

In the consolation finals, the Rebels ran into a well-rounded Gregory-Portland team, and fell by a score of 10-3 in its final match of the team tennis season.

?Our record of 2-2 in the regional tournament was a great result for us,? Hays head tennis coach Debbie Cook said. ?We knew the competition would be tough, but we gave everyone we played a fight.?

Cook said her team would remember its trip to regionals for a long time to come.

Hays team tennis players were: Caitlin Camp, Haley Butler, Katelyn Allred, Brooke Fulwiler, Grace Ortiz, Abby Knedlik, Jarett Stewart, Josh Bieter, Sarah Farrell, Ricky Hearn, Jackson Johnson, Raymond Hayes, Sam Simoneau and Zack Curry.

?This is something they can remember for the rest of their lives,? Cook said.

?

10. Hays?sophomore Alex Schaubhut and junior Justin Davis qualify for state powerlifting meet

Alex Schaubhut had her coach convinced she was at least a year away from having a chance to qualify for the state powerlifting meet in March.

Schaubhut was thrilled, however, when she learned she qualified in the 123-weight class with a 655-pound three-lift total.

?It was a mixture of feeling relief, accomplishment and excitement,? said Schaubhut, who went on to finish 11th at State in March. ?I couldn?t stop smiling.?

Hays High?s Justin Davis, who finished 13th at State in the 114-pound weight class with a three-lift total of 810 pounds, said he expects more of his Hays teammates to be there next season.

?State was a great experience,? Davis said. ?I can?t wait to go again next year, but this time with more of my teammates.?

Hays head coach Stuart Foreman was way ahead of Davis? assessment that the Hays powerlifters will be back.

?I?ve already booked rooms at State for next year,? Foreman said.

Holiday music stops at Irving Berlin's NY door

NEW YORK (AP) ? A caroling group that for 35 years has performed the Irving Berlin classic "White Christmas" on Christmas Eve outside the New York City home where he lived has cancelled the tradition.

A group spokesman says the plans were abruptly cancelled last week for lack of space at the Manhattan home, which now serves as the Luxembourg consulate.

The tradition started in the late 1970s with one cabaret singer outside the home. In 1983, Berlin invited the singers inside for cocoa and cookies.

Berlin died in 1989 at age 99.

Luxembourg Consul-General Jean-Claude Knebeler tells the New York Post the ballroom where the group performed is filled with office equipment because the consulate expanded. He says he hopes the tradition resumes in another year in the consulate's library.

Hero Dog Missing Snout Seems To Have Beaten Cancer

DAVIS, Calif. ? A veterinarian at the University of California, Davis, has some good news about a dog from the Philippines who became an international hero after sacrificing her snout to save two young girls.

After completing six weekly intravenous chemotherapy infusions, Kabang appears to have beaten the cancer she was suffering from, Gina Davis, the primary care veterinarian at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Davis, told the San Francisco Chronicle (). http://bit.ly/Ti87pl

The dog, however, is still facing treatment for heartworms in her arteries before she can have the gaping wound on her face closed. Full treatment of that condition was put on hold during cancer therapy.

Kabang ? a female mongrel ? had the first of three arsenic-based heartworm shots on Dec. 4 and is expected to receive the other two in the second week of January, Davis said.

"It will be one to two months for her to recover from that before she goes in and has the surgery," Davis said.

Kabang had her snout and upper jaw sheared off when she jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle, saving her owner's daughter and niece from serious injury or death, according to newspaper reports in the Philippines.

The dog ended up in Davis earlier this year after a nurse from Buffalo, N.Y., spearheaded a fundraising campaign to bring her to the U.S. Veterinarians in the Philippines were apparently unable to treat her injuries.

Surgeons are planning to perform two or three procedures. The first will involve dental work, extractions and covering exposed roots.

They will then try to close the dog's wound and restore nasal functions. The dog's bony structures are currently exposed to air, increasing the chance of infection, Davis said.

Kabang may return to the Philippines in May or June. The bill for her treatment is expected to top $10,000.

Davis said despite Kabang's many conditions, the dog appears to be in good spirits.

"She has come through everything very well," Davis said. "Her appetite is still good. She's still bright and happy."
