Transcript Of Mayor Menino?s DNC Speech

Boston Mayor Tom Menino speaks to delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte Wednesday. (AP)

Boston Mayor Tom Menino speaks to delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte Wednesday. (AP)

Remarks as prepared for delivery by Thomas Menino, mayor of Boston, Mass.

Good evening, Charlotte. Good evening, fellow Democrats and fellow Americans. I come from Boston, where we launched a revolution, where we first sent John Kennedy to Congress, and where millions of students have come to study, including a great man named Martin Luther King, Jr. So it?s an honor to be here tonight with so many people determined to move our country forward.

I know all Americans are proud to carry the torch of progress, and in Boston, we take that job very seriously. Mitt Romney may come from Boston, but his campaign?s values aren?t Boston values. Because in Boston, we know this country didn?t become great by excluding folks and leaving each other on their own. In Boston you know what we call immigrants? Mom and Dad. You know what we call ?same sex couples?? Our friends. Our brothers and sisters. And in Boston, we know government isn?t the answer or the enemy. It?s a partner.

In Boston?like many cities around this country?we?re seeing progress all around us today. In large part, it?s because this president and this administration gave ordinary people a leg up: construction jobs supported by Recovery Act dollars; better schools pushed by the president?s education reforms; growing hospitals and health centers; and booming life science companies born from national research support. So today, we stand with President Obama and his plan to lead us forward.

Now, Mitt Romney is a decent guy. As the mayor of Boston, I worked with him when he was governor. Much of the time, we worked together pretty well. But he made a lot of decisions that were bad for our state?and now he wants to carry those wrong-headed policies to the rest of our country?

Mitt Romney spends a lot of time in this campaign talking about his business experience and about how, if elected, he will create ?lots of jobs.? I?ve been thinking, this pitch sounds familiar. And you know why? Because it?s the same thing he said when he ran for governor of my state. He promised to bring business to the state, but when he was in office, Massachusetts was 47th out of all 50 states in job creation. There?s a reason for that: Governor Romney cut education, he cut workforce training, he disguised his tax hikes as ?fees,? and he still exploded our long term debt by $2.6 billion. Mitt likes business-speak. Think of me as a reference check. In Massachusetts, Mitt Romney had the one job in his life that?s closest to being president, and he wasn?t all that good at it.

Mitt Romney talked last week about broken promises. Well, he would know. Even worse, Governor Romney is now running away from his major accomplishment?a health care reform that he called a model for the nation. I like Mitt Romney. But he?s learned all the wrong lessons, and now he?s doubling down on all the wrong plans. His campaign is based in Boston, a city moving forward, but his ideas would set our country back.

Up in Boston, we have a plaque that says: ?Paul Revere started a ride, which in a way has never ended.? That?s true about our country, too. In every generation, the American people have taken up that ride, pushing the United States forward. We?ve never gone back. So today we have a clear choice to make. Will we move forward together? Or will we go back to the trickle down philosophies that Mitt Romney believes in? The choice is clear?it?s time to keep moving forward. It?s time to re-elect Barack Obama as president of the United States! Thank you, Charlotte, and good night.

NASA Dawn spacecraft traveling to dwarf planet

(AP) ? Next and final stop: The biggest object in the asteroid belt.

After spending a year gazing at a giant asteroid, NASA's Dawn spacecraft on Wednesday began the cruise toward an even bigger target ? a voyage that will take nearly three years.

Ground controllers received a signal from Dawn that it successfully spiraled away from the asteroid Vesta and was headed toward the dwarf planet Ceres.

The departure was considered ho-hum compared with other recent missions ? think Curiosity's white-knuckle "seven minutes of terror" dive into Mars' atmosphere. Firing its ion propulsion thrusters, Dawn gently freed itself from Vesta's gravitational hold Tuesday night. Since its antenna was pointed away from Earth during the maneuver, NASA did not get confirmation until the next day.

It was "smooth and elegant and graceful," said chief engineer Marc Rayman of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $466 million mission.

Launched in 2007, Dawn is on track to become the first spacecraft to rendezvous with two celestial bodies in a bid to learn about the solar system's evolution.

Dawn slipped into orbit last year around Vesta ? about the size of Arizona ? and beamed back stunning close-ups of the lumpy surface. Its next destination is the Texas-size Ceres.

Vesta and Ceres are the largest bodies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter that's littered with space rocks that never quite bloomed into full-fledged planets. As cosmic time capsules, they're ideal for scientists trying to piece together how Earth and the other planets formed and evolved.

During its yearlong stay at Vesta, Dawn used its cameras, infrared spectrometer, and gamma ray and neutron detector to explore the asteroid from varying altitudes, getting as close as 130 miles above the surface.

Dawn uncovered a few surprises. Scientists have long known that Vesta sports an impressive scar at its south pole, likely carved by an impact with a smaller asteroid. A closer inspection revealed that Vesta hid a second scar in the same region ? evidence that it had been whacked twice within the last 2 billion years.

The collisions spewed chunks of debris into space; some fell to Earth as meteorites.

With its rugged exterior ? complete with grooves, troughs and pristine minerals ? and iron core, Vesta acts more like an "almost planet" than garden-variety, lightweight asteroids.

Vesta was "on its way to planethood if it continued to grow," said chief scientist Christopher Russell of the University of California, Los Angeles.

Asteroids have received renewed attention of late. President Barack Obama canceled a return to the moon in favor of landing astronauts on a yet-to-be-selected asteroid as a stepping stone to Mars. A private company headed by space entrepreneurs wants to mine precious metals from near-Earth asteroids.

After racking up 1.7 billion miles journeying to Vesta, Dawn has another 930 million miles to reach Ceres, where it will arrive in early 2015.

Such a trip is possible because of Dawn's futuristic ion propulsion engines, which provide gentle yet constant acceleration. Once confined to science fiction, the technology has been tested in space and is more efficient than conventional rocket fuel that powers most spacecraft.

Scientists expect a different world at Ceres. Unlike the rocky, pockmarked Vesta, the nearly spherical Ceres has a dusty surface with an icy interior. Some think it may even have frost-covered poles.

"Almost everything we see at Ceres will be a surprise and totally different from Vesta," Russell said.

Mubarak culture minister charged with corruption

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian authorities charged ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's longtime culture minister with corruption on Tuesday and referred him to trial, the state news agency reported.

Justice Ministry officials also said that Mubarak, his wife and two children were being investigated for new corruption allegations pertaining to the purchase of land in the Nile Delta north of Cairo at a small fraction of its market value. No new charges have brought against any of the four yet.

Mubarak is already serving a life sentence on a conviction of complicity in the killing of hundreds of protesters during last year's uprising against his rule. His two sons, onetime heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa, are on trial for insider trading. The two were questioned last month over their 1993 purchase of a plot of land from a housing association led at the time by Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister and longtime friend who unsuccessfully ran for president earlier this year.

Mubarak's wife, Suzanne, was briefly arrested last year on corruption charges but was let go after she paid back to the state money she was accused to stealing.

During a Justice Ministry investigation, Farouq Hosni, who served as culture minister for most of Mubarak's 29 year-rule, allegedly failed to account for 18 million Egyptian pounds ($3 million) of his wealth. He is being asked to return the money to the state.

Hosni, a renowned painter, joins some three dozen stalwarts of the Mubarak regime who face corruption charges. Some of them have been convicted, while others are still on trial.

Hosni was widely thought to be close to Mubarak's wife Suzanne, something believed to have kept him in his prestigious job for close to three decades. Throughout his years as culture minister, Hosni faced a wave after wave of criticism over various issues.

The latest controversy was in 2010 when a $50 million Vincent van Gogh painting was stolen from an Egyptian museum.

Morgan Stanley Cuts Facebook Forecast - Business Insider

AP

Facebook CFO David Ebersman in happier times.

?

Facebook's stock has dropped under $18 today, hitting a new all-time low.

One reason the stock is sinking is a new report from Morgan Stanley analyst Scott Devitt that cuts the company's long-term forecast as well as its 12-month price target.

Morgan Stanley was Facebook's lead IPO underwriter. The underwriting business and analyst/research business should operate independently of each other, so Devitt trimming Facebook's numbers shouldn't raise eyebrows. But people are still going to talk about the relationship between Facebook and Morgan Stanley making this report more harmful than most.

Devitt's new price target is $32, which is crushing for investors that bought the IPO. What Devitt is saying is that if you bought the IPO, a year and three months later you still will have lost money on the investment.

Devitt is adjusting his forecast because mobile use is on the rise and Facebook serves fewer ads in its mobile ads. He also believes new users are less engaged than older users which will affect revenue

Here are the three main points from his note:

Improved mobile user experience: Facebook released updates to its iOS mobile apps on August 23 that improve core features such as photo browsing and notifications; industry participants believe speeds have doubled too. FB also appears to have increased materially the number of mobile Sponsored Stories, from 0-1 per day in July to 2-6 per day today. Due to higher click-through rates, we believe mobile ads may be around 4X as valuable as standard desktop ads, and we boost our overall ad pricing assumptions by around 5%.

But fewer ads per user; lower long-term engagement potential: A better mobile experience may decrease time spent on FB?s desktop site, where it shows around 30X more ads/user/day (86 on desktop vs. 2.5 on mobile in 3QE). Greater mobile usage reduces our estimate of ads/user/day by around 5%, rendering our higher pricing assumptions about net revenue-neutral. Separately, due to a Q/Q decline in 2Q user engagement metrics and management commentary suggesting that late adopters may be less-engaged, we reduce our 2015E-2020E daily engagement, and therefore revenue, by 2%-8%.

Estimates, valuation, risks: Our model changes are long-term in nature: we leave 2012E-2014E unchanged but reduce 2015E-2020E revenue and EPS by 2%-8%. Our 12-month DCF-driven price target is $32 (vs. $38 previously), equivalent to 12X/9X 2013E/2014E revenue, 20X/15X EBITDA, and 39X/29X EPS against 27%/30%/30% revenue/EBITDA/EPS CAGRs from 2013-2016. We incorporate stock-based compensation as a cash expense in our DCF. Key risks include ad pricing, mobile transition, and privacy-related legislation.

Tips Business Opportunity With Low Cost Franchise | Small ...

Franchising is considered as one of the most successful business opportunities, particularly in low cost franchise businesses for aspiring entrepreneurs. Such a business is based on a proven idea. You can check how successful other franchises are before before committing yourself. However, it should always be kept in mind that franchising supply all sorts of business opportunities with high or low investments.

It is a story to believe that more investment means more profits. The largest reason is that the quantity of the investment is largely a function of the kind of industry you are in. Consider instance McDonalds. A potential owner has to own an space or building, have many parking around it, and furniture, machinery and several other costs. This makes McDonalds one of the most expensive franchises to possess. The case is similar with retail franchise of popular brands.

Low cost franchises, on the other hand are a lot less demanding. there?s lesser investment on space, one has the selection of engaging from home and this ensures good opportunity and low investment. There are tutoring businesses, consultancies, cafes and even some retail choices that one can choose for depending on skill and interest.

There are many franchise firms that give excellent business opportunities at moderately low cost.

These are some tips that could think about when taking up a low cost franchise;

Get some legal help to grasp the clauses and conditions of the particular business model.

Do not transcend your budget and keep buffer money in case of an emergency.

Evaluate your business properly to know its position in the market.

A low cost franchise does not mean a small business. If the idea of franchising appeals to you, explore your possibility and opt for a business chance that you simply like. You do not always need a lot of money to set up a successful business, some planning and low investment can go a long way.
