The four biggest moments from ?The Ultimate Fighter?

If you missed Tuesday night's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," read on to find out about who is dividing the house, at what sport Chael Sonnen beat Jon Jones, and who scored a brilliant knockout.

By the hammer of Tor: The fighters made Tor Troeng, the Swedish fighter on Team Sonnen, a hammer out of foam rollers. It instantly reminded me of "Adventures in Babysitting" and, "Take it back, Brad! Take back what you said about Thor!" Oh, that's just me?

[Also: Concern is growing among devoted followers of UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva]

Uriah Hall feeling divided from his team: It started when Hall and Luke Barnatt were in sparring practice. Barnatt thought Hall threw too hard. Barnatt complained about Hall's attitude. Later, Hall mentioned who he would like to fight on his own team and it all snowballed from there. Hall is now our villain of he season.

We're gonna bo-ow-ow-l tonight: While out for a night of bowling with the fighters, Chael Sonnen threw a challenge down at Jon Jones. Bowl three frames, and the loser has to wear the winner's team jersey at a training session. Well, Jones is a great fighter, but he is not a good bowler. Sonnen beat him, and Jones ran out of the bowling alley, Forrest Griffin-style.

[Also: Ronda Rousey's low UFC 157 payday ]

Josh Samman vs. Tor Troeng: Late in the first round, Troeng dropped his hands, and Samman capitalized with perfect strikes. He landed a body kick and a 1-2 combo that knocked Troeng straight to the ground. Afterwards, Troeng said he got caught and there isn't much he can learn from loss. I'm no coach, but learning not to drop your hands is a good place to start.

With the win, Team Jones took control, and put Clint Hester up against Jimmy Quinlan of Team Sonnen.

Protests mark anniversary of Trayvon Martin's shooting death

SANFORD, Fla./NEW YORK (Reuters) - Demonstrators symbolically wearing hoodies gathered in New York, Florida and California on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, reviving a national discussion on gun laws and racial profiling.

Actor Jamie Foxx joined Martin's parents and several hundred protesters for a candlelight vigil in New York City's Union Square, while a smaller crowd estimated at 110 to 125 met at a park in the Florida town where Martin died, vowing to continue to agitate for an end to racial discrimination.

"We want you (to) know we love you and we won't leave you," Foxx told Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, in New York.

Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot and killed Martin, 17, in the Orlando suburb of Sanford on February 26, 2012, and initially went free based on his claims of self defense. Then a national outcry forced the city's police chief to resign and the governor to appoint a special prosecutor.

Zimmerman now faces second-degree murder charges and a June trial. He has maintained his innocence, and supporters say he has been unfairly tainted as racist, noting the neighborhood had been hit by a wave of break-ins and that Zimmerman is of mixed race - his father is white and his mother Afro-Peruvian.

In Sanford, the case triggered deep emotions, and protesters staged a candlelight vigil and moment of silence at 7:15 p.m., the time Martin was killed, at Fort Mellon Park.

"There are no excuses for violence against our children. Let us take the tragedy of Trayvon's death and use it for good," said organizer Geri Hepburn, a white parent of a teenage son who became politically active as a result of the shooting.

The crowd was small compared to the thousands who filled the same park at the apex of public outrage of the killing last year, when the story dominated national news for weeks.

SYMBOLIC HOODIES

In New York, demonstrators recreated the "Million Hoodie March" of last year, when people wore hooded sweatshirts in the style worn by Martin the night of his death, when Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious looking person in his gated neighborhood and defied a police admonishment not to follow him.

The coast-to-coast series of events also saw a crowd gather in the Leimert Park section of Los Angeles. Participants carried lit candles and many of them also wore hoodies, said organizer Najee Ali, who spoke at the gathering in Los Angeles.

"Trayvon was everyone's son. He belonged to all of us," Ali said in a phone interview.

Martin was on his way home to the house of his father's girlfriend, and the hoodie became a symbol of what critics considered racial profiling.

"We are all Trayvon Martin," demonstrators chanted at Tuesday's vigil.

James Flood, 33, a black bartender and screenwriter, said he was constantly the victim of racial profiling and wanted better for his 11-year-old son.

"My skin color cannot change no matter how much money I make. I still get profiled," Flood said. "It has to stop."

Zimmerman, 29, who was released on bail, remained out of sight on the anniversary.

Thrust into the national spotlight, Martin's grieving parents, Fulton and father Tracy Martin, have become national advocates for stricter gun control laws and critics of Florida's Stand Your Ground law.

The law, passed in 2005, allows people to use lethal force in self defense if they are in fear of serious bodily harm. More than 20 states have since passed similar laws.

Police cited that law in initially declining to arrest Zimmerman, which sparked celebrity protests and popular demonstrations across the country, turning the case into an international story.

Zimmerman's attorney plans to invoke the Stand Your Ground law at an April 29 hearing at which a Florida judge could determine if the law applied to Zimmerman, possibly granting him immunity and averting a criminal trial.

Italy parties seek way out of election stalemate

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's stunned political parties searched for a way forward on Tuesday after an inconclusive election gave none of them a parliamentary majority and threatened prolonged instability and a renewal of the European financial crisis.

The results, notably the dramatic surge of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement of comic Beppe Grillo, left the center-left bloc with a majority in the lower house but without the numbers to control the upper chamber, the Senate.

Financial markets fell sharply at the prospect of a stalemate that reawakened memories of the crisis that pushed Italy's borrowing costs toward unsustainably high levels and brought the euro zone to the brink of collapse in 2011.

"The winner is: Ingovernability," ran the headline in Rome newspaper Il Messaggero, reflecting the deadlock the country will have to confront in the next few weeks as sworn enemies are forced to work together to form a government.

Ratings agency Standard & Poor's said on Tuesday that policy choices of the next Italian government would be crucial for the country's creditworthiness, underlining the need for a coalition that can agree on new reforms.

Pier Luigi Bersani, head of the center-left Democratic Party (PD), has the difficult task of trying to agree a "grand coalition" with former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, the man he blames for ruining Italy, or striking a deal with Grillo, a completely unknown quantity in conventional politics.

The alternative is new elections either immediately or within a few months, although both Berlusconi and Bersani have indicated that they want to avoid a return to the polls if possible: "Italy cannot be ungoverned and we have to reflect," Berlusconi said in an interview on his own television station.

For his part, Grillo, whose movement won the most votes of any single party, has indicated that he believes the next government will last no more than six months.

"They won't be able to govern," he told reporters on Tuesday. "Whether I'm there or not, they won't be able govern."

He said he would work with anyone who supported his policy proposals, which range from anti-corruption measures to green-tinted energy measures but rejected suggestions of entering a formal coalition: "It's not time to talk of alliances... the system has already fallen," he said.

The election, a massive rejection of the austerity policies applied by Prime Minister Mario Monti with the backing of international leaders from U.S. President Barack Obama to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, caused consternation across Europe.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble put a brave face on it, saying "that's democracy".

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo was more pessimistic.

"This is a jump to nowhere that does not bode well either for Italy or Europe," he said.

A long recession and growing disillusionment with mainstream parties and tax-raising austerity fed a bitter public mood and contributed to the massive rejection of Monti, whose centrist coalition was relegated to the sidelines.

Projections by the Italian center for Electoral Studies showed that the center-left will have 121 seats in the Senate, against 117 for the center-right alliance of Berlusconi's PDL and the regionalist Northern League. Grillo would take 54.

That leaves no party with the majority in a chamber which a government must control to pass legislation.

"THE BELL IS RINGING"

On a visit to Germany, President Giorgio Napolitano said he would not comment until the parties had consulted with each other and Bersani called on Berlusconi and Grillo to "assume their responsibilities" to ensure Italy could have a government.

He warned that the election showed austerity policies alone were no answer to the economic crisis and said the result carried implications beyond Italy.

"The bell is ringing for Europe as well," he said in his first public comments since the election.

He said he would present a limited number of reform proposals to parliament, focusing on jobs, institutional reform and European policy.

However forming an alliance may be long and difficult and could test the sometimes fragile internal unity of the mainstream parties.

"The idea of a majority without Grillo is unthinkable. I don't know if anyone in the PD is considering it but I'm against it," said Matteo Orfini, a member of Bersani's PD secretariat.

"The idea of a PD-PDL government, even if it's backed by Monti, doesn't make any sense," he said.

For his part, Berlusconi won a boost when his Northern League ally Roberto Maroni won the election to become regional president of Lombardy, Italy's economic heartland and one of the richest and most productive areas of Europe.

For Italian business, with an illustrious history of export success, the election result brought dismay that there would be no quick change to what they see as a regulatory sclerosis that has kept the economy virtually stagnant for a decade.

"This is probably the worst possible scenario," said Francesco Divella, whose family began selling pasta under its eponymous brand in 1890 in the southern region of Puglia.

Berlusconi's campaign, mixing sweeping tax cut pledges with relentless attacks on Monti and Merkel, echoed many of the themes pushed by Grillo and underlined the increasingly angry mood of the Italian electorate.

But even if the next government turns away from the tax hikes and spending cuts brought in by Monti, it will struggle to revive an economy that has scarcely grown in two decades.

Monti was widely credited with tightening Italy's public finances and restoring its international credibility after the scandal-plagued Berlusconi, who is currently on trial for having sex with an under-age prostitute.

However, Monti struggled to pass the kind of structural reforms needed to improve competitiveness and lay the foundations for a return to economic growth. A weak center-left government may not find it any easier.

The view from some voters, weary of the mainstream parties, was unrepentant: "It's good," said Roger Manica, 28, a security guard in Rome, who voted for the center-left PD.

"Next time I'll vote 5-Star. I like that they are changing things, even if it means uncertainty. Uncertainty doesn't matter to me, for me what's important is a good person who gets things done," he said. "Look how well they've done."

3 Tips To Avoid Internet Marketing Scams

Avoid Online ScamsThe online world is full of scams. While this does not sound very promising for someone who is starting up their own business, it is important to be aware of the risks and dangers that are out there. Finding unbiased information is a lot more difficult these days, especially considering the amount of marketing that takes place on the Internet. There will always be people out there who are looking to make a quick buck. The first thing business leaders need to understand is what they have to do in order to avoid getting tricked or scammed. This is especially important for businesses like Pittsburgh Internet Marketing Exact and individuals who are just started to sell their services online.

Avoiding the Scams: Look for Reviews

Internet marketing scams can take a number of different shapes. This is often what can make it difficult to determine what is the truth and what is a scam. Some scammers are very clever and very good at hiding their true motivations from readers. If you receive an offer, it is a good idea to see if others have received it as well. What you can do is simply search online to see if others have had the same experience. By reading through the reviews of a specific company or website, you will begin to get an idea of what the company is like. It is important to remember that some customers may have it out for the company, and may falsely state that it is a scam. The trick here is to look at how many reviews state the company is a scam. Another possibility is that the scammer paid ?customers? to write good reviews of their website. Although this is not a completely accurate way of determining a scam, it is a good indicator that something is not right.

Contact Details

This may seem like a very simple thing to do, but it is vital that every business has contact details available. Normally when you go onto a website, there will be an icon that clearly marks out the company?s contact information. These will normally include a telephone number, an address, an e-mail and sometimes even a fax number. A lot of the time, there will also be a help desk available for customers who have questions. Steer clear of websites that have none of this. If you want to make doubly sure, you can always ask a question. See how long it takes for the company to get back to you. Companies that take themselves seriously and care about their customers needs will always respond to you promptly, even if it is two or three days later.

Look at Their Product Patterns

Scammers generally do not have sustainable products. Since these products generally do not last, they are going to constantly need ?new ones in order to replace them. Take a look at the product history of the company and, again, make sure to look at reviews. Patterns of new products being released only months apart is going to indicate a true scam here.

Keeping safe on the Internet is important, and it is also important to scrutinize anyone that you come across. There is a lot of opportunity out there for unscrupulous people to take advantage of others. By knowing some of the telltale signs, you will be able to avoid the worst companies.

Grow your web presence with Pittsburgh Internet Marketing.?Exact Match Domains are still a good idea. Visit the site ?for further information.

British Gas owner Centrica's annual earnings rise five percent

LONDON (Reuters) - British utility Centrica unveiled plans to invest more in its residential services business and North America after reporting a 5 percent rise in full-year earnings, in line with expectations.

Centrica, which owns Britain's biggest household energy supplier British Gas, said earnings per share (EPS) for the year to end December rose to 27.1 pence, compared with earnings of 27.4 pence per share according to a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll of 21 analysts.

Centrica, which pulled out of plans to build new nuclear power stations in Britain with partner EDF last month, also announced the resignation of the head of British Gas, Phil Bentley, in a move which had previously been flagged.

Kansas rallies past Iowa State in Self's 500th win

AMES, Iowa (AP) ? Kansas coach Bill Self has 500 wins because Elijah Johnson "blacked out."

That's the only way Johnson could describe one of the great performances by a Kansas player under Self.

Johnson scored a career-high 39 points ? including eight in the final 29 seconds of regulation and 12 in overtime ? and No. 6 Kansas rallied to beat Iowa State 108-96 on Monday night for Self's milestone victory.

Travis Releford added 19 points for the Jayhawks (24-4, 12-3 Big 12), who snapped Iowa State's 22-game home winning streak and kept pace with No. 13 Kansas State atop the Big 12.

"He was unbelievable. He was the best player in the country (Monday night)," Self said. "That will go down as one of the better games that any guard has ever played at Kansas."

It's hard to remember a more clutch 5? minutes of basketball by anyone on any team this season.

Johnson hit two 3s and made two free throws with 4.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 90-all. He and Releford buried 3s to put Kansas ahead 100-92 with 2:03 left, and Johnson drilled a 30-footer with 54 seconds left that deflated a sellout crowd.

Johnson said that a personal conversation with Self on the bench put him in a zone that doomed the Cyclones.

"It was a locker room type of conversation. It just happened to happen during a game. I feel like that kind of set some fire through my body," Johnson said. "My teammates saw me responding."

Korie Lucious scored 23 points and Tyrus McGee had 22 for the Cyclones (19-9, 9-6), who dropped their third overtime game in Big 12 play ? and their second straight at the hands of the Jayhawks.

After the game a handful of those in the student section hurled small plastic megaphones at the Jayhawks as they ran back to their locker room.

The anger seemed to be directed at Johnson's dunk with 2 seconds left and the game well in hand. Johnson opened the post-game news conference by apologizing to Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg, saying he simply got caught up in the moment.

"I shouldn't have dunked that ball," Johnson said.

For all the talk concerning Self's quest for win No. 500, this game seemed destined to hinge upon whether Iowa State, one of the nation's best offenses, could score enough on the stingy Jayhawks, the nation's leader in field goal percentage defense entering play.

As it turned out, both teams had little trouble making shots until overtime.

That's when the Cyclones lost their touch.

Freshman Georges Niang beat the shot clock with a 3, Iowa State's 17th of the game, to give the Cyclones an 87-82 lead with 44.5 seconds left. But Johnson answered, and the Jayhawks went 6 of 7 from the field in overtime while Iowa State went 1 of 9.

"We just couldn't get stops at the end of the game," Lucious said. "It's hard. We feel like we had the game won."

For Iowa State, this loss was painfully similar to the one in Lawrence on Jan. 9.

Ben McLemore banked in a late 3 to force overtime of a game the Cyclones had controlled throughout. The Jayhawks prevailed, and though the Cyclones bounced back, they certainly didn't forget their lost night in Lawrence.

But with March just around the corner, Iowa State and the rest of the league is chasing the Jayhawks ? again.

"Our guys battled. I've been saying that all year. Hopefully we have a lot of season left," Hoiberg said. "I love our guys. They're going to continue to fight back."

Though Kansas and K-State are tied for first, the Jayhawks hold the tiebreaker because they beat the rival Wildcats twice. Kansas' remaining regular season schedule; Texas Tech and West Virginia at home, struggling Baylor on the road, doesn't appear to be all that daunting as the Jayhawks go for at least a share of its ninth straight Big 12 title.

"We've got a chance to at least play for it, get a piece of it going to Baylor," Self said.

Self, who began his head coaching career at Oral Roberts, is 293-57 at Kansas. He tied former Temple legend John Chaney by reaching 500 victories in his first 662 games.

His milestone night got off to an interesting start, though

Self was called for a rare technical foul for arguing a call less than 3 minutes into the game ? much to the delight of a raucous, sellout crowd decked out in bright gold.

Self said after the game that he wanted to draw it in order to fire up his own team.

It worked ? as have many other moves on the journey to 500.

"I don't think it really means that much to be honest. I'm glad we got it. It means I've been doing it for a while," Self said. "All I really care is if this team is having the best year possible."

Collaperty launches 'Kickstarter' for Property Investors | Investors Beat

Boston-based friends and business partners Rishi Palriwala, Afjal Wahidi,?Amit Patel?and?Qais Alkurdi?were first profiled in our Dirty 30 series. Yesterday, they collectively launched Collaperty ? a new social platform incorporating elements of crowdfunding set to revolutionize the way real estate investors connect and fund deals. Investors Beat has the exclusive on the launch.

With the introduction of Facebook and Twitter, social networking has provided people with a new way to connect and the real estate industry is no different. This pool of savvy people are always looking at better ways to collaborate and do business whether that be finding other investors to fund their investments or locating profitable deals.

?The real estate market has always existed, but the need for a platform like this is certainly timely,? says Collaperty co-founder Afjal Wahidi. ?Due to the downward economy, the lack of capital from banks, and the lack of one central infrastructure for real estate enthusiasts to meet, the Collaperty model made sense.?

The website, conceptualized in 2011 and now open to the public, is designed for all real estate enthusiasts, especially those who are looking to expand their business in the US. ?The current U.S. securities law allows the accredited investor community the most access on our platform: from seeing deals to being able to invest in them,? says Wahidi. It is anticipated that the passing of the JOBS Act will allow more investors to play the property game.

?Collaperty?s ability to allow investors to collectively pool funds towards a specific deal stands out the most,? explains Wahidi. ?This breaks down the capital barrier to entry per investor and allows for new investment across property types, giving individuals the opportunity to diversify their portfolio even more.?

The website may be new, but its slew of functions bring promise, incorporating design features from the best ? namely Kickstarter, LinkedIn and AngelList. It allows users to share their investing experience and establish an investor?s credibility through their profile. Collaperty also allows a search for potential deals permitting Sponsors and Investors to invest together, giving you greater control of your property investments. Investors Beat is excited about this launch and we predict that it will change the way property investing is done forever.

Collaperty is holding its official launch party on March 7th in Boston. Investors Beat will be onsite for the exclusive coverage. Stay tuned!

Good reads: the meteors we miss, Tesla's frigid review, car-buying woes, bionic eyes

A meteor blazed over Siberia on Feb. 15. As the rock punched through Earth?s atmosphere, it lit up the morning sky and produced a powerful shock wave. The meteor ? the largest recorded space rock to hit Earth in more than a century ? injured nearly 1,500 people and created a 20-foot crater near the Russian town of Chebarkul.

?Could anyone have seen the meteoroid coming?? asks Konstantin Kakaes in Slate. Probably not, at least not yet. The meteor was most likely too small for current instruments to detect. But as Mr. Kakaes writes, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has made huge strides in locating objects before they reach our planetary backyard.

Countless chunks of rock and ice collide with Earth?s atmosphere each year. Most of them burn up on entry. NASA tracks roughly 5,000 ?potentially hazardous asteroids? that measure more than 330 feet across. But the Russian rock was likely only 50 feet wide before it entered the atmosphere. Finding objects on that scale is much more difficult. ?We now track nearly 100 times more PHAs than we did in 1993,? writes Kakaes, and much of those gains came from identifying small objects that were previously undetectable.

Still, space agencies have a long way to go before these fireballs are no longer a surprise. Roughly 10 meteors crash into Earth each year. Many hit unpopulated areas, such as oceans. Thousands of Cana-dians saw one in 2008. (For more on asteroids, see page 13.)

COLD SHOULDER FOR TESLA

Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk came out swinging with details he says will prove that a recent New York Times article about the Model S was ?fake.? Times writer John Broder took the all-electric car for a test drive from Washington, D.C., to Connecticut. (See One Week, Feb. 25.) Tesla loaned Mr. Broder the car so he could try out the new fast-charging stations that now dot Interstate 95 and extend the range of the Model S beyond its reported 265 miles. But after a night of below-freezing temperatures, Broder says that the car battery prematurely ran out of juice, leaving him stranded beside the road and leaving many to wonder if Motor Trend?s 2013 Car of the Year can survive harsh winters.

As James Holloway writes in a play-by-play breakdown for Ars Technica, Tesla and the Times spent the next week hurling words and data at each other. After the BBC car show Top Gear showed a Tesla pooping out in the middle of a test drive in 2008, Tesla has logged the speed, battery charge, and performance of every car that it lends to journalists. The data shows that Broder routinely pulled out of Tesla fill-up stations without fully charging the battery, which Mr. Musk says is the real reason that the car petered out prematurely. Broder acknowledges that he did not top off the battery ? a full charge can take more than an hour ? but says he always ?replenished more than enough energy for the miles I intended to drive.?

CNN ran its own test drive from Washington to Boston without incident. ?However, without an overnight stop in below-freezing temperatures, this is far from a repeat of Broder?s test,? writes Mr. Holloway, ?though it is arguably more representative of the way Model S owners are likely to drive the I-95.?

PROTECTION FOR WILY CAR DEALERS

In survey after survey, car salesperson ranks among the least trusted professions. Shoppers complain about the haggling, the seemingly manipulative sales tactics, and how difficult it is to accurately comparison shop. With 14 million vehicles sold in the United States each year, why is buying a car so awful? NPR?s Planet Money dug into the history of car dealers. Reporter Alex Bloomberg says that not only was our current system designed this way, but many local legislators want it to remain just as it is.

Practically every state has laws that protect car dealers. This legislation ? mostly written back when US auto-makers had enormous power and no foreign competition ? can prevent manufacturers from severing ties with problematic dealers and can carve out jurisdictions for dealerships, thereby limiting competition. While automakers have lost much of their influence over the past few decades, these laws have ensured that dealers ?have become even more powerful,? Mr. Bloomberg says. ?In each state, dealers contribute as much as 20 percent of sales tax revenue.? That gives lawmakers little reason to tinker with the current system.

A NEW AID FOR SIGHT

The US Food and Drug Administration has just approved its first bionic eye. Trials show that the prosthesis, called Argus II, can restore partial sight among some blind patients.

?This enables people who are completely blind to see enough to improve their mobility,? Mark Humayun, a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, tells Technology Review. ?It allows people to make out the sidewalk and stay on it without twisting an ankle, see unexpected obstacles like parked cars, make out a table, see someone coming through a doorway.?

The prosthetic eye consists of a video camera that mounts to a pair of glasses and a chip embedded near the retina. Second Sight, the California company behind the device, already sells the Argus II in Europe for roughly $100,000.

Iran says it has captured a foreign 'enemy drone'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said Saturday that it had captured a foreign unmanned aircraft during a military exercise in southern Iran.

Gen. Hamid Sarkheili, a spokesman for the military exercise, said the Guard's electronic warfare unit spotted signals indicating that foreign drones were trying to enter Iranian airspace. Sarkheili said Guard experts took control of one drone's navigation system and brought it down near the city of Sirjan where the military drills began on Saturday.

"While probing signals in the area, we spotted foreign and enemy drones which attempted to enter the area of the war game," the official IRNA news agency quoted the general as saying. "We were able to get one enemy drone to land."

Sarkheili did not say whether the drone was American.

In Washington, a CIA spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

Iran has claimed to have captured several U.S. drones, including an advanced RQ-170 Sentinel CIA spy drone in December 2011 and at least three ScanEagle aircraft.

State TV said the Guard's military exercise, code-named Great Prophet-8, involved ground forces of the Guard, Iran's most powerful military force. State TV showed tanks and artillery attacking hypothetical enemy positions. He said various systems, including unmanned planes that operate like suicide bombers, were tested.

"Reconnaissance as well as suicide drones, which are capable of attacking the hypothetical enemies, were deployed and their operational capabilities were studied," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

Reprogramming cells to fight diabetes

Feb. 22, 2013 ? For years researchers have been searching for a way to treat diabetics by reactivating their insulin-producing beta cells, with limited success. The "reprogramming" of related alpha cells into beta cells may one day offer a novel and complementary approach for treating type 2 diabetes. Treating human and mouse cells with compounds that modify cell nuclear material called chromatin induced the expression of beta cell genes in alpha cells, according to a new study that appears online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"This would be a win-win situation for diabetics -- they would have more insulin-producing beta cells and there would be fewer glucagon-producing alpha cells," says lead author Klaus H. Kaestner, Ph.D., professor of Genetics and member of the Institute of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Type 2 diabetics not only lack insulin, but they also produce too much glucagon.

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are caused by insufficient numbers of insulin-producing beta cells. In theory, transplantation of healthy beta cells -- for type 1 diabetics in combination with immunosuppression to control autoimmunity -- should halt the disease, yet researchers have not yet been able to generate these cells in the lab at high efficiency, whether from embryonic stem cells or by reprogramming mature cell types.

Alpha cells are another type of endocrine cell in the pancreas. They are responsible for synthesizing and secreting the peptide hormone glucagon, which elevates glucose levels in the blood.

"We treated human islet cells with a chemical that inhibits a protein that puts methyl chemical groups on histones, which -- among many other effects -- leads to removal of some histone modifications that affect gene expression," says Kaestner. "We then found a high frequency of alpha cells that expressed beta-cell markers, and even produced some insulin, after drug treatment.

Histones are protein complexes around which DNA strands are wrapped in a cell's nucleus.

The team discovered that many genes in alpha cells are marked by both activating- and repressing-histone modifications. This included many genes important in beta-cell function. In one state, when a certain gene is turned off, the gene can be readily activated by removing a modification that represses the histone.

"To some extent human alpha cells appear to be in a 'plastic' epigenetic state," explains Kaestner. "We reasoned we might use that to reprogram alpha cells towards the beta-cell phenotype to produce these much-needed insulin-producing cells."

Fact-check: Give these films Oscars for inaccuracy

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Many of this year's Oscar-nominated films are based on true stories ("Lincoln," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Argo") or on well-known novels ("Les Miserables," "Life of Pi"). And as you can imagine, it's easy for those stories to put a twist on a tale -- often intentionally, for drama's sake -- not telling it the way it was real life or in an earlier book.

Those changes mostly go unnoticed unless you're really familiar with the source material, but we found five notable ones.

Sony Pictures

The SEALs in "Zero Dark Thirty" made too much noise, says a man who should know.

1. Osama bin Laden raid was too noisy in 'Zero Dark Thirty'
Who can you believe about the death of Osama bin Laden if not the man who killed Osama bin Laden? That former Navy SEAL spoke to Esquire magazine and saw the movie for the first time with Phil Bronstein, who wrote the Esquire article. He pointed out some minor errors -- the dog on the real mission?was a Belgian Malinois, not a German Shepherd and the night-vision goggles worn by the SEALs in the film didn't exist when bin Laden was killed. But his biggest correction? The real SEALs went about their mission in silence. In the movie, a SEAL loudly yells "Breacher!" when he wants someone to blow a door at the compound, and characters call out bin Laden's name. In real life, the SEALs storming the Pakistan terrorist compound tried to keep as quiet as possible, for obvious reasons.

2. No one chased the plane onto the runway in 'Argo'
Kathleen Stafford, one of two women among the six Americans rescued from Iran in the events that inspired "Argo," told the Washington Post that the film Hollywooded up her actual experiences. "Argo" is full of fictionalized sections -- in real life, the six were split between two homes, not just the Canadian ambassador's, for one thing, and Canada's role is downplayed in the film in order to make the CIA look like more of a player. But perhaps the most dramatic scene in the film, where Iranian revolutionaries drive out on an airport runway chasing a departing plane just as it lifts off, never happened. Tony Mendez, the real CIA operative played by Ben Affleck, reports that the airport departure was "smooth as silk," with only a minor mechanical problem slightly delaying takeoff, not gun-waving revolutionaries.

Warner Bros.

"Argo" added drama to its airport scene.

3. Connecticut wasn't pro-slavery as shown in 'Lincoln'
Unless you live in the Nutmeg State, you probably didn't notice how Connecticut voted on the Thirteenth Amendment in the movie "Lincoln." But?Rep. Joe Courtney sure did. He wrote a letter to director Steven Spielberg complaining that two out of three Connecticut votes are seen being cast against abolishing slavery. In real history, all four votes from his state were pro-abolition. (The film's screenwriter?acknowledged?he changed the facts.) A Lincoln historian pointed out that the film actually got a lot of things right, including Lincoln's enjoyment of a certain bathroom joke. The historian's quibbles were minor: Mary Todd Lincoln's teeth were too white, the word "sniper" would not have been used, General Lee did not surrender from horseback, and Abe Lincoln didn't swear so much.

4. Was that song really in 'Les Mis'?
Fans of the "Les Miserables" musical know it backwards and forwards. They know what someone who's never seen "Les Mis" on stage wouldn't -- that the song "Suddenly," about Valjean's love for adopted daughter Cosette, isn't in the stage show. But that's hardly a goof, it's an intentional addition. Since it was an original piece for the film, "Suddenly" was the one song eligible to be nominated for a best original song Oscar. (We're guessing it will lose to Adele's "Skyfall.") Fans seem to like the new song. As theologian Mark Roberts points out, it's smartly written and the title?hearkens?back to a word in Victor Hugo's novel.

5. Samuel L. Jackson's favorite swear word didn't exist in 'Django' days
Much of the controversy surrounding "Django Unchained" was about its near-constant use of the n-word. But another term drew attention too. You know it: Starts with "mother," incorporates a famous f-word. Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Leonardo DiCaprio's creepy slave-hating slave Stephen, says it four times in "Django," but according to IMDb.com, that expression was unlikely to have been used until World War I. Mother--oh, never mind.

Weinstein Company

Samuel L. Jackson's favorite swear word wasn't around in slavery times.

Ga. executes man who killed college students

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) ? A 38-year-old inmate who was convicted of killing two college students after confessing to his FBI agent father was executed in Georgia on Thursday, apologizing to the families of both victims before being injected at a state prison.

Andrew Allen Cook was pronounced dead at 11:22 p.m., about 14 minutes after he was injected with the sedative pentobarbital. He was the first inmate to be executed since the state changed its procedure in July from a three-drug combination to a single dose.

With his last words, he apologized to the families of Mercer University students Grant Patrick Hendrickson, 22, and Michele Lee Cartagena, 19, who were shot several times as they sat in a car at Lake Juliette, which is about 75 miles south of Atlanta. He said what he did was senseless.

"I'm sorry," Cook said as he was strapped to a gurney. "I'm not going to ask you to forgive me. I can't even do it myself."

He also thanked his family for "their support, for being with me and I'm sorry I took so much from you all."

The Georgia Appeals Court on Wednesday temporarily stayed Cook's execution to consider a challenge to the state's lethal injection procedure. But the Georgia Supreme Court lifted the stay Thursday and all other appeals were exhausted.

Cook's lawyers have argued at various stages in their appeals of his death sentence that he suffered from mental illness and was being treated for depression up to the time of his death.

Mary Hendrickson, the mother of one of the victims, recently told television station WMAZ-TV in Macon she's been waiting 18 years for justice.

"I think that's what it was: the devil's work," she said. "When all that is going on, I was just thinking to myself: 'Well, the devil is not going to win. He's not going to win over my heart. He is not going to win.'"

The single-drug injection began at about 11:08 p.m. Cook blinked his eyes a few times, and his eyes soon got heavy. His chest was heaving for about two or three minutes as his eyes closed. Not too long after, two doctors examined him and nodded and Carl Humphrey, warden of the state prison in Jackson, who announced the time of death.

Corrections officials said Thursday evening that Cook had received visits from family earlier in the day and ate the last meal he had requested ? steak, a baked potato, potato wedges, fried shrimp, lemon meringue pie and soda.

A jury sentenced Cook to death after he was convicted in the January 2, 1995 slayings at Lake Juliette. Cook wasn't charged until more than two years later. He confessed to his father, a Macon FBI agent who ended up testifying at his son's trial.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reached out to John Cook in December 1995 because they were interested in speaking to his son. When he called his then-22-year-old son to tell him the GBI wanted to talk to him, he had no idea the younger man was considered a suspect.

"I said, 'Andy, the GBI is looking for you concerning the Lake Juliette homicide. Do you know anything about it?'" John Cook testified at his son's trial in March 1998. "He said, 'Daddy, I can't tell you. You're one of them. ... You're a cop.'"

Eventually, Andrew Cook told his father that he knew about the slayings, that he was there and that he knew who shot the couple, John Cook recalled.

"I just felt like the world was crashing in on me. But I felt maybe he was there and just saw what happened," he said. "I then asked, 'Did you shoot them?'

"After a pause on the phone, he said, 'Yes.'"

As a law enforcement officer, John Cook said he was forced to call his supervisor and contacted the Monroe County sheriff.

At the trial, as he walked away from the stand, the distraught father mouthed "I'm sorry" to the victims' families who were sitting on the front row of the courtroom. Several members of both families acknowledged his apology.

Nikon Now Paying Microsoft Royalties for Android Powered Cameras microsoftandroidnikon

Microsoft announced yesterday that it has entered into a patent licensing agreement with Nikon for Nikon?s Android-powered digital cameras. While the details of the agreement were not revealed, Microsoft did say that it will begin collecting royalties from Nikon for certain camera models.

You might be wondering what Android has to do with all of this, since it?s not a Microsoft project. Android is a Google-backed, Linux-based, open-source operating system, but just because it?s free software doesn?t mean it has been cheap for device manufacturers to use it on their gadgets. The reason? Patent claims.

A number of large tech companies have been forcing device manufacturers to sign licensing agreements in order to protect themselves against patent infringement lawsuits for various components of Android. It?s not just computers and phones, either. Since Android is now being baked into dedicated cameras, camera manufacturers (e.g. Nikon) have begun feeling the pressure.

Nikon Now Paying Microsoft Royalties for Android Powered Cameras nikons800c

The Coolpix S800c is Nikon?s first Android-powered compact camera

Now that Nikon is agreeing to play nice with Microsoft, it can carry on with selling the Coolpix S800c (its first Android-powered compact camera) and spreading Android to more of its future cameras without worrying about Microsoft launching a troublesome lawsuit against it.

Other camera manufacturers that are already in the Android-powered-camera game include Polaroid and Samsung, and the latter has already entered into a similar licensing agreement with Microsoft.

As more and more camera companies are moving into Internet-connected mobile-OS-powered smartcameras, many of them will likely turn to Android as their OS of choice. If that happens, Microsoft stands to reap quite a bit in royalties from the camera industry.

Florida?s Medicaid expansion could hit legislative opposition

JIM SAUNDERS, THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

Gov. Rick Scott dropped a bombshell Wednesday when he announced support for a Medicaid expansion. But a day later, it remained unclear whether the idea would get through the Republican-dominated Legislature.

House GOP leaders appear to have the strongest reservations, with Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, and Appropriations Chairman Seth McKeel, R-Lakeland, publicly expressing doubts about the wisdom of the expansion.

?I remain skeptical that that?s in the best interests of the state,? McKeel said Thursday morning.

Weatherford, during an appearance before the Florida Retail Federation and in a television interview, also repeatedly used the word ?skeptical.? Pointing to broader federal budget and debt problems, he questioned whether Washington would make good on a promise to pay billions of dollars for the expansion.

?We?re talking about a federal government that is not able to pay its bills,?? Weatherford said during an appearance on the show, ?Florida Face to Face.?

Some Senate Republicans indicated they might be more willing to go along with Scott, who said he would support expanding Medicaid eligibility for three years and then revisiting the issue. The federal government is slated to pay all of the expansion costs for the first three years, before the state has to pick up a portion of the tab.

?I support the governor, and I think the Senate has an open mind on it,?? said Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater. He later added, ?I think we give it a shot and see how it works.?

Senate Health Policy Chairman Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, pointed to the possibility that a Medicaid expansion could help ?safety net? hospitals that serve large numbers of low-income and uninsured people. More Medicaid coverage would produce additional revenues for hospitals, helping offset other types of funding cuts.

Three Sisters Raped And Killed In India; Police Hunt Killers

The girls were raped and killed in the village of Murmadi, which is located in the Bhandara district in Maharashtra, reports The Hindu. The sisters, ages 6, 8 and 11, were reported missing from school on Feb. 14 by their grandfather. A villager discovered the bodies of the three girls in a well just a kilometer from Murmadi.

Rajendra Singh, inspector general of police, Nagpur Range, told reporters, ?The findings of the post-mortem report suggested that there was sexual assault on all three girls. But the report is not clear on how they were killed,? reports The Hindu. Villagers protested and blocked a highway demanding the police find the culprits responsible for the terrible crime.

According to The Hindu, the three sisters were being raised by their mother and grandparents after their father died five years ago.?

The deaths were initially ruled an accident and villagers were outraged by what they believed to be poor police work. Their mother was quoted by CNN-IBN as saying, ?The police did not take the case seriously and did nothing for two days.? Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel said one officer involved in the investigation had already been suspended, notes AP. Manish Tewari, Union Minister of State and Member of Parliament, said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was giving the family 1 million rupees, approximately $18,300, reports AP.

The Guardian notes that sexual assaults and police inaction have outraged India recently. In December, the gang-rape and murder of a woman in Dehli sparked global protest and caused India to enact new laws protecting women and increasing the sentences for a rape conviction and also enabling the death penalty for extreme cases, notes AP.

Florida Basketball: Gators' Takeaway from Stunning Loss at Missouri

So much for balanced scoring and solid defense. That formula, which had propelled the University of Florida basketball team to the top of the SEC, fell woefully short Tuesday night as the Missouri Tigers exposed the Gators as a team with virtually no inside presence and an inability to finish.

The result was a crushing 3-point loss for the Gators, who led for most of the game until Missouri took their first lead with 2:47 remaining. The Gators, who only days ago appeared to have a lock on the SEC title, are now clinging to a 1 1/2 game lead over Alabama, with five conference games remaining before the SEC tournament.

The Gators (21-4,11-2), enter the final stretch of the regular SEC season with a myriad of concerns, not the least of which is an inconsistent, inside post game. Against Missouri, Florida center Patric Young was virtually invisible offensively, scoring only two points in four field-goal attempts in his 26 minutes on the court.

Never was the lack of an inside game more apparent than in the Gators' next-to-last possession, trailing by one point with 18 seconds remaining.

The Gators never threatened to go low, before senior guard Kenny Boynton launched an errant 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining. Missouri's Junior Cadougan grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Florida forward Erik Murphy. Cadougan sank two free-throws, sealing the victory for Missouri, which remained undefeated at home (15-0) and improved to 8-5 in the SEC (19-7 overall).

It was an impressive turnaround for Missouri, which lost to Florida by 31 points (52-83) earlier this season in Gainesville.

Biggest Challenge Facing Florida's Basketball Team

Biggest Challenge Facing Florida's Basketball Team

  • Lack of an inside game

  • Inability to finish

  • Lack of a go-to-shooter

  • Loss of Will Yeguete

  • Poor shooting from the foul line

The Gators' inability to finish was very reminiscent of its early season loss at Arizona, where the Gators blew an 11-point lead with 10 minutes remaining, before losing by one point, 65-64. The Gators actually led Arizona by 6 points with 56 seconds left in the game.

?

The Gators have blown similar leads in their back-to-back Elite 8 losses to Louisville and Butler during the last two NCAA tournaments.

In spite of a lineup that features balanced scoring, the Gators showed once again that?they lack a prolific scorer they can turn to with the game on the line.

Compounding the Gators' problems at Missouri was poor free-throw shooting. The Gators shot 50 percent from the free-throw line (6-12), including a stretch of five misses in a row during the second half.

Despite these obstacles, the Gators are still in the driver's seat for an SEC title and could secure a No. 2 seed at the NCAA tournament barring any additional setbacks.

But to do so, Gator coach Billy Donovan will have to find a way overcome a number of Achilles' heels, or the Gators could be headed for a disappointing finish. The possible return of injured forward Will Yeguete for the post-season could help, although forward Casey Prather has filled in admirably.

Florida's road to the Final Four has now detoured into the road to recovery. That journey begins Saturday night in Gainesville, when the Gators look to avenge their most lopsided loss of the season in a rematch with Arkansas. The Razorbacks defeated the Gators 80-69 on February 5 in Fayetteville.

USA Badminton Junior International Trials: Timothy Lam demolishes Albert Li to wrap up U17 title

USA?s impressive shuttler Timothy Lam surprised everyone as he claimed Boy?s Singles U17 title after crushing his higher ranked compatriot Albert Li in the final clash at USA Badminton Junior International Trials 2013 in USA, on Tuesday, February 19.

The third seeded Timothy, who played terrific badminton in all matches of the tournament, continued his roller-coaster run in the final contest and easily thrashed Albert who was the top seed in Boy?s Singles U17 draw of the championship.

Timothy played with wonderful speed and confidence in the final encounter. He did not show any mercy to his challenger at any stage in the battle and easily ended it up in straight games with a striking margin of 21-6 and 21-16 in 44 minutes.

On the other hand, the top seeded Albert failed to continue his dominating run in the arena. He could not stop the aggressive play of his lower ranked challenger and eventually went down without securing even a single set.

The impressive Timothy delivered extremely well from the opening points of first set as he played with phenomenal speed and took over the control.

Timothy proved that he has attained highest class skills in the arena and eventually successful in taking a strong domination in the arena. He was in dominating position all the way to take a phenomenal lead until the end of starting part.

The confused Albert could not play positive game after the mid-game interval as he lost his focus and committed many errors along the way and remained struggling to find a good flow.

While, Timothy did not reduce the pace of the game at any stage and comfortably clinched the first set with a comfortable 21-6 difference on the board.

Things were similar in the second set of this entertaining fight as Timothy played in the similar attacking way. He was in remarkable form and he remained successful in building a stunning gap until the one-minute break.

Albert could not put up strong show in the second set of this battle as his in-form opponent Timothy played aggressive badminton and wrapped up the game with a reasonable 21-16 total on the score board.

CollegeFashionista: Balanced Fashion at the Ohio State University

by Elizabeth Sensky

People say that culture is a telling indicator of the health of a community. If this is true, then fashion is one of its most obvious symptoms. Take a walk down the main drag of any city and you immediately get a feel for the pervading lifestyle. The hippie chic vibe of Fashionistas in Boulder, Colorado, for instance, reveals its eco-friendly emphasis. While the edgy and diverse fashions of New York City speak to its bold, no-nonsense attitude. So, what does a stroll down High Street reveal about fashion in Columbus, OH -- the land of the buckeyes?

Well, the answer to this question comes in the form of today's Fashionista. She is the ultimate example of buckeye fashion. Striking the perfect balance between utility and design, this Ohio State University Fashionista captures the relaxed and balanced mind-set of Columbus. Comfort is key to fashion in the Midwest and Columbus is no exception. But comfort doesn't always equate boredom, as today's example illustrates. Notice how she juxtaposes feminine, floral shorts with a sporty Nike jacket and rugged winter boots. This look is reflective of the current sportswear theme that has taken hold of all the latest street style blogs. It also speaks to the dominant sports culture at OSU. Walk around campus during any game day and you will understand that when it comes to football, buckeyes mean business. An overwhelming majority of students take our buckeye mascot to heart and literally go nuts for our sports programs. This is one facet of Columbus style not to be overlooked.

Another facet comes to light when studying this Fashionista's tights with shorts statement. Her black tights not only tie together her shorts and jacket but they also create a slimming silhouette. She accessorizes her outfit with a cozy pink scarf and quirky, skeleton earrings. These details enhance the playful persona of her ensemble. Even while showcasing current fashion trends, one thing remains clear about this Fashionista: she is at ease and prepared for a long day walking the sidewalks of OSU's large campus. Like most OSU students, she pays attention to current trends but never becomes their victim.

2013-02-18-SenskyXHuffingtonPost5.jpg

With a massive population of nearly 60,000, there is no denying that OSU has its fair share of sweat pant wearing, UGG-boot loving students. But interspersed, you will discover creative individuals of all backgrounds. It is difficult to describe a typical OSU Fashionista or Fashionisto because each fashion conscious student displays his or her own unique sensibility. There is no typical. Thick-framed hipster style meshes with fringed boho chic. Modern minimalists coexist with tattooed punks. Although you will find less radical style here than the more fashion-forward big-city pavements, the beauty of Columbus fashion comes in its broad appeal. Our state slogan says it well; we are at "the heart of it all." You can call us a style crossroads that blends many elements into a mild yet appealing mix.

This middle-of-the-road mentality can lead people to brush off Ohio fashion. But don't be fooled by the Midwest facade. When you dig underneath the surface, you will find a vibrant fashion scene that thrives on this versatility. If fashion is truly a symptom of culture, then it is safe to say that the buckeye spirit is a picture of health.

Elizabeth Sensky is a senior studying fashion merchandising at The Ohio State University. You can often find her baking tasty desserts, practicing power yoga and watching Ted Talks late into the evening. She is a strong believer in natural food and the healing powers of an all-night dance party. After graduation, she hopes to travel the globe before eventually finding her place within the world of sustainable fashion.

Shooting in Sunrise leaves man dead on golf course

Sunrise Police have a mystery on their hands.

What started as a call about shots fired into cars in a shopping plaza parking lot led police to a dead body on a nearby golf course.

Here?s what was known Monday: Sometime around 4 a.m. a Sunrise officer on routine patrol heard gunshots coming from the parking lot of the Springtree Country Club Plaza, 3800 block of North University Drive.

At the same time, police received a 911 call about shots being fired into cars in a nearby plaza, which houses Goldfinger Gentlemen?s Club and a Hooters restaurant a few feet north.

Two cars -- a gray Mazda 6 and a gray Nissan Sentra -- were discovered, riddled with bullet holes. At the adjacent Seven Bridges at Springtree golf course, the body of an unidentified man lay on the greens, some 15 feet from the parking lot.

He had been shot to death.

What was not known: the victim?s name.

?We are still trying to piece together the details,? said Sunrise Police spokeswoman Cindi McCue.

The parking lot and the golf course share a hedge line.

A man who answered the phone at the golf course declined to comment, referring calls to Sunrise Police.

Officers were canvassing the area early Monday to see what businesses were open at the time of the shooting.
